Default Wildlife rescue saving a young Great Horned Owl at Havana (photos by Sam Boatman)

This morning (Sunday, March 19) I discovered a young Great Horned Owl in a sand trap at Havana Country Club and Golf. It had obviously accidentally left its nesting tree as it was uninjured but too young to fly. The Golf ambassadors notified wildlife rescue and soon Mykayla of "Rescuing Ocala Wildlife" arrived and had the situation under control. She said that they were very busy this time of year with owls leaving the nest too soon. She explained that as long as the owl was not injured the remedy was to place it in a tree and the adults would take care of it from that point on.

Mykayla of "Rescuing Ocala Wildlife" is a super person and very good at what she does. She shared some of her knowledge with us at a presentation at The Village Birders. She pointed out that it is now legal for non-license folks to do bird rescues but it's really best to have somebody like her who really knows what he or she is doing. Look at the talons and beak on that bird! It may be a youngster but it can inflict some serious damage on fools that rush in to try to help! If I see a bird or other animal that needs help, I will call "Rescuing Ocala Wildlife" every time!
