Stickers removed from our mailbox - twice

We had recently put a Smiley Face Sticker on our mailbox in Polo Ridge. It was removed in less than a day. I checked with our mailman and he said other stickers have been removed, but he has no idea why or who.
I put a 2nd smiley face sticker on in the past day and it was removed again.
Makes me feel badly that someone is doing this and we have no idea why.
Any thoughts?

CFrance 04-14-2014 07:46 PM

There are many people who think putting stickers on mailboxes is tacky. You've obviously got a proactive one of those in your neighborhood. There have been stickers on many mailboxes in our neighborhood for years, but nobody bothers them. I would guess it's a private citizen removing yours, not the postal workers.

seacoastbargain 04-14-2014 07:52 PM

I agree that it is another Villager removing the sticker. I don't know why we are being targeted though because there are lots of other stickers on mailboxes. Guess they are against smiling!
I'm going to keep putting various stickers on and see what happens...now I'm just being curious!
Wondering if they would take off a US Flag?!?!?

That's a good one. Try that.

Hancle704 04-14-2014 07:57 PM

Stickers have been removed from mail boxes for many years in our area. Apparently there is some kind of rule that does not permit personalization of mail boxes. Might be the code enforcement folks. If it really upsets you, maybe you should call the District Office for clarification.

seacoastbargain 04-14-2014 08:02 PM

Thanks...yes I may call for clarification though the Mailman said they have no rule against it. Like I said, other stickers are still intact on our side.
Just the fact that some Villager things they personally have the right to remove something bothers me, I guess.

Regor 04-14-2014 08:08 PM

We've been here for 17 years. The Postal dept. always remove stickers. Why would anyone want them anyhow?

Average Guy 04-14-2014 08:09 PM

There seems to be quite a few kids visiting The Villages this time of the year. Perhaps one or more of them was amused by your smiley face sticker and took it. That seems to me to be more likely than some Villager selectively removing some, but not all, of the stickers.

seacoastbargain 04-14-2014 08:10 PM

I really stuck them on the mailbox so whoever gets them is going to have a fractured smiley face....I'm really thinking it is a Villager, not a child. And as I said, the mailman says the postal service does not remove them.

Most likely someone who dislikes happy people. I've noted a number of disgruntled folks in TV.

Put a sticker on you box that reads, "Do not remove sticker under penalty of law" and see what happens.

In Sanibel there are many stickers and they are not removed.

HHMAN 04-14-2014 08:28 PM

The stickers are against Postal regs. but enforcement is not likely or at least practiced widely. I personally think that do sorta look junky.

Good idea! You can get it off your mattress.

zonerboy 04-14-2014 08:49 PM

How about putting a smiley face sticker on every mailbox at the postal station? That Might be quite a challenge for the self appointed sticker remover.

From the USPS website:
3.2.4 Mailbox Accessories - Decorative art and devices can be attached to the exterior of approved mailbox designs provided they do not interfere with mail delivery or present a safety hazard. Devices can also be mounted in the interior of approved mailboxes provided they do not cause the intended mailbox to fail capacity test described in 3.15.1 and do not interfere with mail delivery or present a safety hazard. Any advertising on a mailbox or its support is prohibited. Unrestricted spring-loaded devices and designs are prohibited. Auxiliary flags or devices used to signal the customer that the mail has arrived must operate automatically without requiring additional carrier effort.

keithgerri 04-14-2014 09:20 PM

Some of us are not disgruntled but it does look tacky all the crap people put on their mail boxes. Like kids with to many stickers and not enough to do. To bad some people have forgot how to read the numbers that are put on their mail box. Just my observation but I would never remove them. Happy Days

Good point. If you need a sticker to remember the box then why not just remember the number? Lot's of people use the same sticker so how does that help? I actually don't remember my number but I do automatically go to the right box. I think if I had a memory issue I'd put the number on my key or something.

TVMayor 04-14-2014 09:43 PM

I do not consider myself the owner of the mail box, the pool or the stop sign in front of my house. Does anybody decorate stop signs?

This actually is more applicable to post mounted rural mail boxes you purchase and place yourself.

perrjojo 04-14-2014 09:55 PM

Just curios, why do you need a sticker on your mailbox?

CFrance 04-14-2014 09:55 PM

I automatically go to the right box because my neighbor has the box above it with a sticker on it! But I must admit I would know where the box is anyway.

The stickers don't bother me. It's fun to see what people are "rooting" for, what's important to them, like seeing the license plates and team decorations on golf carts.

Bonanza 04-15-2014 02:33 AM

My opinion is the stickers look crappy. Come on, folks -- you know which mailbox is yours!

I actually saw someone changing some of the stickers on mailboxes.
Now -- THAT is funny!

billethkid 04-15-2014 05:43 AM

put a sticker that says....smile you are on camera;gotcha!

Lovey2 04-15-2014 06:15 AM

...

seacoastbargain 04-15-2014 06:16 AM

Just to clarify..we put the Smiley Face Sticker on our mailbox not only to find it easily, but to cover the even worse looking remnants of the previous stickers. I shall be putting a sticker up today that says "please don't remove my sticker."
Mostly just a fun thing at this point to keep the person busy.

graciegirl 04-15-2014 06:16 AM

I thought I remembered someone was talking about this

https://www.talkofthevillages.com/fo...ilboxes-39346/

https://www.talkofthevillages.com/fo...r-creep-61217/

My PERSONAL favorite from all of the other mailbox sticker posts is the one below from Tpop1

Stickers, Stickers everywhere,
What a sight to see,
Yes, they help me find my box,
Please just let them be!

They don’t really even look that bad,
Not every box is stickered,
My next door neighbor has one on his,
Which guides me to my box quicker!

I knew that they were pasted there,
When I bought here in T.V,
It was no surprise at all,
Might have been for you, not me!

I looked around before I bought,
Few surprises did I face,
I knew that stickers were on the boxes,
And the Buffalo had been displaced!
(thought I’d work in another hot button issue)

rubicon 04-15-2014 06:17 AM

Only in The Villages could you get so much chatter about such a benign topic but I'll bite too.:ho:

When you witness some folks who leave their keys in their mail box you understand the need for some sort of sticker or identification.

I also don't like it but it is apparently needed for some folks

Try this exercise, Florida law states that a license plate frame cannot block the county or Sunshine State portion of the plate. Every frame advertising the Dealership blocks that section of the plate. Yet the only time I have ever hear of anyone receiving a ticket is a driver who had a plastic cover over his plate which is also illegal

skip0358 04-15-2014 06:19 AM

They do look tacky. The mailbox at the mail station is actually owned, operated and serviced by the USPS. It is against postal regulations to post a sticker on these boxes. If they wanted they could all be removed. Personally I don't see a need for them. You don't have one on your house or a friends house you look for the number or after you've gone somewhere a few times you just remember the location. JMO

:clap2: Crazy are the things that bother people. Used to be we just shook our heads and walked away. Now we feel entitled to take matters in our own hands. Sorry you are having to deal with "The Stickler".

Parker 04-15-2014 06:25 AM

I love the mailbox stickers. I like to see what everyone chooses and consider the whole thing rather cheerful. I have a tiny palm tree on mine, not to identify, but because I just like it.

Seacoastbargain, I'm with you on this. How irritating for someone to take it upon themselves to police your mailbox. I'll bet it is someone who's box is next to yours, and who has no sticker on it. That's where I'd start looking for the perpetrator. Book em Danno! (Relax folks, all in humor)

The things that people do and worry about when they have too much time on their hands ... It never fails to both baffle and amuse me

Chronic Sticker Stealer

For years we've had a sticker on our mail box......the same as 3 around our box. Someone has been removing or defacing them for years. He/she removes them, we put another back. Even tried attaching it with super glue. He/she doesn't usually remove other stickers. The interesting thing is that there was one time that most of the stickers had been removed around the building. The mail lady said that she doesn't care what we put on the box as long as she can read the number from inside. It's a small thing but it bothers us that someone takes it upon themselves to remove the stickers (back of the building only), probably when no one else is around. Seems sneaky and underhanded. Will he/she pull plants from my yard that he/she thinks inappropriate? Personally I locate our box by "landmarks"....other stickers.

First, you are committing a crime by defacing US Postal Service property. Second, if everyone placed all types of stick ons on the mail boxes, the postal station would soon look unacceptably tacky.

I really believe these regulations refer to mail boxes that homeowners install themselves.

I'm glad to know that someone else is amazed that 'stickers' at a mailbox bothers so many people. Everyone spends about a minute getting their mail, yet they are annoyed that they have to look at stickers for this minute or less. Can't we think of something a little more important to be bothered by?

If I was to do it,
I would have opted for a Clarabelle sticker or better yet --
Princess Summer Fall Winter Spring . . .
that is, if I could find one!
