Why so many Immigrants?
 

Every year about a million immigrants are admitted to America legally. We get more immigrants than any country on Earth. Not easy, lots of paperwork, costs money, millions are denied. Estimates of illegal immigrants in the country are 10-12 million, lots of them are minorities. They'll brave deserts, walk over mountains, swim rivers, die of thirst and starvation, and pay thousands of dollars to their guides. If they get caught and deported, they do it all over again and again.

What the heck are they thinking? I see people on this forum telling us how racist this country is, how "systemic oppression" grinds minorities to dust and despair, and our economic system is designed to crush the weak. Plus our police are racists brutes who like to beat people up.

I can only conclude that all the immigrants that keep coming here are complete idiots, or masochists, probably both.

Best country on earth but we should not be allowing illegals to come here

That's a topic for another thread. I'm waiting for an explanation on why they keep coming, legal or illegal, if this country is so racist and oppressive.

I'm sure GoodLife hopes not also.

I was talking with a Hispanic man the other day and he admitted that he is here illegally. He owns a business doing landscaping work and employs a small crew. He said the crime and gangs in Mexico make life very dangerous and difficult to run a business. Here, he said, if you work hard you will be successful. We had a plumber do some work yesterday, an older Vietnamese man who had immigrated here 4 years ago. It's pretty amazing, a foreigner that probably knew very little English was able to start his own business. We have so many people, native born Americans, who received a free public education that can only whine and moan there are no opportunities for work. Pretty pathetic.

We're only racist's towards African Americans? :ohdear:

A fellow I know who is a naturalized American citizen born in India said that when his brother visited he looked around and could not believe his eyes, saying "What a country! Even the poor people get to be fat".

We've got over 2 million immigrants direct from Africa, so that can't be it.

There it is, we have 40 million immigrants, millions more every year, and they just don't want to see it. If only they could talk to certain people, then I'm sure they would stop coming.

There are people that really have a hard time with the terms legal and illegal. Excuse the expression, but it's black and white.

We already have one really good answer. They just don't see it.

A whole lot of people look for anything they can label as racism/bigotry/xenophobia regardless whether it is or not. They see only what they want to see.

Well said...paperwork? What paperwork is being done since all of them come here illegally. They don’t want to do paperwork cause then they have to pay taxes

About a million immigrants are admitted every year legally, with paperwork. Millions more get denied for one reason or another. Millions more come every year illegally.

One thing we know for sure, lots and lots of people from all over the world want to come and live in America.

And millions of those here illegally have fake social security cards, and get legitimate jobs and pay actual real federal income taxes, and social security tax, and medicare tax, and in some cases, state and local income tax as well.

Why do they come? Because they are FROM countries that are even worse than we are. That doesn't make us any good at all. It just means we're not as bad as Venezuela, Panama, parts of Mexico, Columbia, the rest of South America, or Syria or other parts of the world that are war-torn.

America isn't great. It's merely "not as bad" as many other places.

That's strange, in the last 20 years we've had over 17 million legal immigrants from Europe and Canada. They must have come hear cuz "it's not as bad" :icon_wink:

My wife worked for a large mall management company in their payroll department. The illegals that worked for them knew that if they claimed the max number of dependents that there would be no taxes taken from their paycheck. They paid no federal income tax. I imagine that state and local taxes work the same way. A whole lot of the illegals get paid under the table so no tax is paid by them.

The ones who claim the max amount - STILL pay medicare and social security tax. No one is exempt from that, except certain civil servants and religious organization employees.

The ones who get paid under the table, are being paid by employers who are breaking the law by employing them.

Also, people are not illegal. Their actions are legal or illegal - but the people themselves are not illegal. They really are actual people. Their existence as "people" is 100% legitimate.

So with that train of thought there are no felons, rapists, child molesters, arsonists, murderers, domestic offenders...............

America gets millions of immigrants from all over the world, we're more popular as a place to move to than anywhere else on earth. People vote with their feet. They keep voting for America. Nothing twisted at all about that.

ALL of Our Ancestors were Immigrants!
They fled their countries for many reasons, war, famine, religious persecution, a chance of a better life, etc. You and your family would not be here had America, Land of the Free, not welcomed you!
The only indigenous peoples are Native American Indians and we pretty well screwed them over and continue to do so as well as other people of color and creed.
Bigotry and racism is well on display.

Yes we took what we wanted --- took the Indians land - took the western part of the US from Mex. and yes we took Fla. We gave the Indians Nothing but disease..We used the slave to make America great

What percentage of illegals came here legally and overstayed their visa? We had an Irish guy who had been living in Somerville Ma for 30 years ... to get his visa renewed he would have had to leave his business and go back to Ireland and re-apply (at the time) and he didn't leave his wife and kids and business ... just overstayed. They sent him back to Ireland in 2016. Deacon in the Church. He was one of the illegals you are referencing.

I’m a descendant of immigrants from Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands (Jewish), Belgium, France, England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Africa, and India. Also 3.4% Neanderthal! Some were well off when they came here or even had titles. Many came as indentured servants and spent years essentially in slavery in Pennsylvania and Virginia and Kentucky before working off their sentences and making lives for themselves. Some were descended from slaves in British Guiana. One of my sisters and one of my first cousins married men from Mexico, one of them here illegally. My Danish great-grandfather was born a couple years after his parents arrived in Minnesota. In 1896 he started college, at a new school in Lincoln, Nebraska. All of his classes were taught in Danish, even though he was born here. He went on to write religious articles in Danish for sale to Danish immigrants on the prairies. His wife was born in Norway. None of their children spoke any Danish or Norwegian. Isn’t this a great country? I’m so glad to be a descendent of immigrants, even though I prefer that immigrants be legal and treated with respect and dignity and protected so long as they abide by the laws.
