What are the rules about dogs in TV???
I am new here and wondering if what I am seeing is acceptable. People walk their dogs and allow them to urinate on lawns (and those lawns were expensively landscaped). Some do use a baggie to pickup solid waste. Some let them go on a house that has not sold yet, and not pick it up. Is there a designated area people with dogs should take them? Are there rules regarding barking dogs? What recourse does someone in TV have if a neighbor leaves a barking dog out on a screened lanai? Dog lovers please be kind and not shoot the messenger. The rest of us have rights too.

:D RedChariot, in addition to what feedback you get from this thread, you might want to take a couple of swings at the Search function with some different search terms to see feedback from prior threads on the subject. Search term that might hit about everything you'd ever want to know on the topic: "dog poop" And welcome to TOTV!! Bill :) |

Pets can do no wrong in the eyes of many owners. However, I often cringe thinking that my visiting, often barefoot, grandchildren will "slide down a hill" in the dog messes. Some of the dog walkers are quite eccentric as we view them. They truly do believe the pets are human. They will literally walk the dog up the grassy front lawn hill to the pet's favorite spot. I'm laughing as I type this........but again, I don't think home owners can win over the pooches......plus there are bigger concerns in the world.....but yes, it is annoying. |

RedChariot, it's like this: There are people here in TV (like everywhere else) who choose to ignore the generous concept of being considerate of others. Sometimes they do it selectively and sometimes it is a determined lifestyle effort and encompasses everyone and every situation. Occasionally it is unconscious, but not often. Most times it is a flat disregard for others. And bottom line, they do it because they WANT to. It's a choice. TV is my home and I love living here. At our age, we all know how to behave and what is socially accepted behavior. Unless someone is newly arrived from another culture where social norms are different, or unless they are mentally altered in some way, they know how to act. If others don't follow the program there aren't many options to correct the annoyance. Even if they are 'called on it', if they are determined and stubborn enough, they will just do whatever they really want to do, when nobody is looking next time. You can try various ideas, but you'll have your gut in a knot most often.... your 'knickers in a twist'. The good thing here is that those people reveal themselves really fast, so you don't have to waste your time only to discover later that they aren't worthy. AND P.S. You CAN call Community Watch about the barking dog left on the Lanai. You must give their address and your name. I did it to relieve my ears but also to help the poor distressed doggie who was left out there repeatedly. It worked. Both he and I are much calmer now and live in harmony. |
I am new to The Villages - just moved in in January. Let me start by writing that I have enjoyed TOTV for months now - you have been very informative and bring a smile to my face on a daily basis. Once one dog pees on a spot, each and every passing pooch has to put its mark on it - that is the case with our 'corner' lot. Yesterday, a spotted a man coming up the street with his dog and for some reason I just knew he was going to stop in our yard. I took my cup of coffee out to the lanai and stood there - staring at the man - no words spoken - when he noticed me watching, he tugged at the dogs leash and pulled him back in to the street. He knew he was wrong to allow his dog to pee on our grass but did it anyway!!! Guess I'll have to purchase a can of green spray paint to cover the brown spots

An idea
IF the dog leaves a deposit that the owner doesn't pick up why not go pick it up and see where he goes home to and leave him the deposit. As I stated in an earlier post my front yard up north was my neighbors dogs private outhouse. So when it was time for the grass to be cut I grabbed my trusty garden shovel and as I found a deposit it got flung back over the property line. Took a few times but they got the message.

Like your post Skip. I had to educate my neighbor in CT in a similar way. My home is on a cul-de-sac with a large frontage and it also has a town right-of-way to open space that I maintain by cutting the grass. My neighbor would literally power walk down her driveway and across the street to my yard to take care of business with her dog. They catch on quickly ;)
I do not condone this behavior, but a friend of mine told me that during his rebellious youth, he would package up the little suprise in a little brown paper bag and bring it back to the owner's home and place it on the sidewalk leading up to his front door. Light it on fire and ring the doorbell and quickly walk away and watch with delight as the owner came out to stomp out the fire!! :girlneener: |

Soooo, I decided these neighbors need to be educated on the county's leash laws. I went to my computer and downloaded and printed the leash law. A few days later I walked over and inserted it in their mailbox. Weeks later, I get a letter from the U.S. Postal Inspectors office saying the neighbor accused me of stealing their mail. They explained in detail the legal consequences of this offense and I need to cease and desist. Seems the wife "poopatrator," used to work for the P.O. :boxing2::boxing2: |

Corner Lot
I also live on a corner lot in Springdale. Love my neighbors they are the greatest. However a couple of years ago a house behind us was sold to new owner. They have a small very sweet dog that gets walked everyday. Let me also clarify I have 2 small dogs my husband and I love dearly. However our dogs only do their duty in our yard! Unfortunately our neighbor chooses to walk his dog on others lawns! Yes he pics up the poop but that dies not mean some residue is left not to mention what his dogs pee may do to anothers yard. We have stared and that did nothing. We really want to get along with ALL our neighbors but this has created a lot of animosity. Why don't people realize this isn't common area that their dog is pooping and urinating on a private lawn ? Thanks to Marion county we cannot put up one of those cute little signs that shows no doggie business on our lawn....(a little tidbit we were not told of when we bought). How do you nicely let someone who is obviously oblivious to others property that you would like them to not walk their dog on our lawn. Any ideas people? Still love TV and 99% of my neighbors :)

We had a problem as we have a corner lot and peopel think that the property on the far wall is common area and walk apparently large dogs judging by what is left behind. I am with one of the other posters about being direct. I even once picked up the dog poop and left it on the offenders door step each and every time until they got the message. For some reason they did not want to come out and "discuss" it with me. ;)
However in the last place we lived we found out that we could not do anything about dogs on the easement as we did not own that land and therefore it was not private property. Ever try to call a cop when a dog starts pooping and have the cop arrive in time to see it happen. it is a losing situation and I found that if I returned what their dog left behind they had nothing they could say about it and would choose some more passive homeowner's place to walk their dog. |
Poop, Poop, E, Doooo
Had this problem, spoke to the main culprit kindly, put out 2 little signs that read "Please No Pets", problem solved!
