What are the rules about dogs in TV???

I am new here and wondering if what I am seeing is acceptable. People walk their dogs and allow them to urinate on lawns (and those lawns were expensively landscaped). Some do use a baggie to pickup solid waste. Some let them go on a house that has not sold yet, and not pick it up. Is there a designated area people with dogs should take them? Are there rules regarding barking dogs? What recourse does someone in TV have if a neighbor leaves a barking dog out on a screened lanai? Dog lovers please be kind and not shoot the messenger. The rest of us have rights too.

:D

RedChariot, in addition to what feedback you get from this thread, you might want to take a couple of swings at the Search function with some different search terms to see feedback from prior threads on the subject. Search term that might hit about everything you'd ever want to know on the topic: "dog poop"

And welcome to TOTV!!

Bill :)

Not gonna shoot the messenger. I agree. That is why we bought a CYV...so our dog could be in its OWN yard safely for hours, and do its dooooooty on our OWN property.

Everyone here has a yard.....so USE it. (Not somebody else's.)

Sounds just like our neighborhood in Vermont. I think it's a losing battle.
Pets can do no wrong in the eyes of many owners. However, I often cringe thinking that my visiting, often barefoot, grandchildren will "slide down a hill" in the dog messes.

Some of the dog walkers are quite eccentric as we view them.
They truly do believe the pets are human.

They will literally walk the dog up the grassy front lawn hill to the pet's favorite spot. I'm laughing as I type this........but again, I don't think home owners can win over the pooches......plus there are bigger concerns in the world.....but yes, it is annoying.

Oh... I don't think so, at least I hope not.

RedChariot, it's like this: There are people here in TV (like everywhere else) who choose to ignore the generous concept of being considerate of others. Sometimes they do it selectively and sometimes it is a determined lifestyle effort and encompasses everyone and every situation.
Occasionally it is unconscious, but not often. Most times it is a flat disregard
for others.
And bottom line, they do it because they WANT to. It's a choice.

TV is my home and I love living here. At our age, we all know how to behave and what is socially accepted behavior. Unless someone is newly arrived from another culture where social norms are different, or unless they are mentally altered in some way, they know how to act.

If others don't follow the program there aren't many options to correct the annoyance. Even if they are 'called on it', if they are determined and stubborn enough, they will just do whatever they really want to do, when nobody is looking next time.

You can try various ideas, but you'll have your gut in a knot most often.... your 'knickers in a twist'. The good thing here is that those people reveal themselves really fast, so you don't have to waste your time only to discover later that they aren't worthy.

AND P.S. You CAN call Community Watch about the barking dog left on the Lanai. You must give their address and your name. I did it to relieve my ears but also to help the poor distressed doggie who was left out there repeatedly. It worked. Both he and I are much calmer now and live in harmony.

I am new to The Villages - just moved in in January. Let me start by writing that I have enjoyed TOTV for months now - you have been very informative and bring a smile to my face on a daily basis. Once one dog pees on a spot, each and every passing pooch has to put its mark on it - that is the case with our 'corner' lot. Yesterday, a spotted a man coming up the street with his dog and for some reason I just knew he was going to stop in our yard. I took my cup of coffee out to the lanai and stood there - staring at the man - no words spoken - when he noticed me watching, he tugged at the dogs leash and pulled him back in to the street. He knew he was wrong to allow his dog to pee on our grass but did it anyway!!! Guess I'll have to purchase a can of green spray paint to cover the brown spots

skip0358 04-17-2012 08:34 AM

An idea

IF the dog leaves a deposit that the owner doesn't pick up why not go pick it up and see where he goes home to and leave him the deposit. As I stated in an earlier post my front yard up north was my neighbors dogs private outhouse. So when it was time for the grass to be cut I grabbed my trusty garden shovel and as I found a deposit it got flung back over the property line. Took a few times but they got the message.

George Bieniaszek 04-17-2012 09:02 AM

Like your post Skip. I had to educate my neighbor in CT in a similar way. My home is on a cul-de-sac with a large frontage and it also has a town right-of-way to open space that I maintain by cutting the grass. My neighbor would literally power walk down her driveway and across the street to my yard to take care of business with her dog. They catch on quickly ;)

I do not condone this behavior, but a friend of mine told me that during his rebellious youth, he would package up the little suprise in a little brown paper bag and bring it back to the owner's home and place it on the sidewalk leading up to his front door. Light it on fire and ring the doorbell and quickly walk away and watch with delight as the owner came out to stomp out the fire!! :girlneener:

Had a similar problem when we lived on acreage in Palm Beach county. Neighbors allowed their two dogs to run all over the neighborhood. We had the granddaughter over for a holiday and she stepped in it while playing in our front yard. Took my shovel, scooped up the Do Do, walked over to the neighbors driveway and flinged it. Would you believe, the husband and wife were standing together in their driveway, he with a beer in his hand. He mumbled something about,.....oh, my girls let the dogs out. Problem is those dogs were always out running loose.

Soooo, I decided these neighbors need to be educated on the county's leash laws. I went to my computer and downloaded and printed the leash law. A few days later I walked over and inserted it in their mailbox.

Weeks later, I get a letter from the U.S. Postal Inspectors office saying the neighbor accused me of stealing their mail. They explained in detail the legal consequences of this offense and I need to cease and desist. Seems the wife "poopatrator," used to work for the P.O. :boxing2::boxing2:

Good for her! It's against the law to open another persons mail box and for good reason.

Not only stupid but ineffective as well. The direct approach is far superior to the passive-aggressive approach IMO. I once had a neighbor who called the police because my dog was barking in our fenced yard. The police came by and apologized, but had to make the call. I brought the dog in, but I knew who made the call, so I retaliated by calling the zoning board about a sign he had in his yard advertising some multi-level marketing scheme he was into, and was against local rules, and they made him take down the sign. Had he simply come to my house and explained that our dog's barking was disturbing him and asked if there was anything I could do, I would have been more than willing and happy to solve the problem. By calling the cops, he unduly got them involved, got his own problem brought to the attention of authorities, and lost and chance of gaining my respect or friendship. If you fell you are in the right and don't have the guts and confidence to approach things correctly, you are probably not going to get a satisfactory result.

Corner Lot

I also live on a corner lot in Springdale. Love my neighbors they are the greatest. However a couple of years ago a house behind us was sold to new owner. They have a small very sweet dog that gets walked everyday. Let me also clarify I have 2 small dogs my husband and I love dearly. However our dogs only do their duty in our yard! Unfortunately our neighbor chooses to walk his dog on others lawns! Yes he pics up the poop but that dies not mean some residue is left not to mention what his dogs pee may do to anothers yard. We have stared and that did nothing. We really want to get along with ALL our neighbors but this has created a lot of animosity. Why don't people realize this isn't common area that their dog is pooping and urinating on a private lawn ? Thanks to Marion county we cannot put up one of those cute little signs that shows no doggie business on our lawn....(a little tidbit we were not told of when we bought). How do you nicely let someone who is obviously oblivious to others property that you would like them to not walk their dog on our lawn. Any ideas people? Still love TV and 99% of my neighbors :)

I'll take a shot. Why not engage this person in a conversation that goes something like this............. I have seen you walking your dog, and it seems very sweet and well behaved. I also own a couple of dogs, and I noticed something early on. The neighbors didn't like my dogs doing their business in their yards, and as I thought about it, they were right. I have only allowed my dogs to go in my yard since then and it has kept my neighbors happy and with little inconvenience to me or my dogs. Probably no one has confronted you about this, but beleive me, there are likely several neighbors who feel you are persona non grata because of this. I am telling you this because I have found you to be a reasonable and respectful person, and would assume you did not want hard feelings with your neighbors.

albertehill 04-17-2012 01:38 PM

If you get caught you'd be peeing jail, totally illegal, you exposed innocent UPS workers to who knows what.

That is most spineless STUPID trick I heard of.
Moreover, to brag about it on a public forum you are shabby.

Really?? Your dog's outside barking and you didn't bring him in till the police came. Maybe they shouldn't have called police, but it's a bit much to expect your neighbor to come and complain to you. If you can hear your dog barking assume it's bothersome to your neighbors. This is a more of a pet peeve than a dog pooping in my yard. As a dogowner, it's my responsibility to make sure my dog is not barking and annoying others. I shouldn't wait for my neighbor to get up the nerve to come complain to me before I'm "more than willing & happy to solve the problem."

I didn't hear the dog, my windows were closed the air conditioner was on, I was watching television, and I have hearing loss. I could have heard the telephone however, had my neighbor chosen to call me instead of the police.

Yup...I’m afraid you are. And I'm so sorry, because it's not right, but unfortunately, corner lots are the prime peeing areas. I'm a dog owner and I never, ever let my dogs walk on other people's property...but so many people do. Just please realize that for every inconsiderate @$#%%# dog owner out there...there are many, many more dog owners who are responsible and care about their neighbors.

Amen to that. Our entire choice of homes was based on our two dogs and their needs without infringing on others. We have since put in two doggy doors, extended the lanai and pretty much made it very comfortable and safe for our dogs. They go out on the lanai each morning to catch the sun and then come in before it gets too hot. My female likes it cold so she will stay in most of the day and then sleep on the lanai at night. She also enjoys Gecko hunting but has yet to catch one. I have not sat on the lanai in a year but am glad that the dogs are enjoying it. :icon_wink:

Vinny 04-18-2012 12:32 AM

We had a problem as we have a corner lot and peopel think that the property on the far wall is common area and walk apparently large dogs judging by what is left behind. I am with one of the other posters about being direct. I even once picked up the dog poop and left it on the offenders door step each and every time until they got the message. For some reason they did not want to come out and "discuss" it with me. ;)

However in the last place we lived we found out that we could not do anything about dogs on the easement as we did not own that land and therefore it was not private property. Ever try to call a cop when a dog starts pooping and have the cop arrive in time to see it happen. it is a losing situation and I found that if I returned what their dog left behind they had nothing they could say about it and would choose some more passive homeowner's place to walk their dog.

jebartle 04-18-2012 04:09 AM

Poop, Poop, E, Doooo

Had this problem, spoke to the main culprit kindly, put out 2 little signs that read "Please No Pets", problem solved!
