Sandy is coming to visit!!
Sunday morning 9:30 am. Clinton CT Harbor area. High tide already having an impact.
Took a walk this afternoon and whole harbor area is buzzing. Town boat launch backed up 5 deep getting boats out; people hanging plywood over windows; everything that can move being stowed! Barrier island and one low lying beach road under mandatory evacuation but I'm 1/4 mile up from water at 22ft above sea level so should be ok. Wind not supposed to be the issue, strom surge / high tide is. We will be holding on for wet ride. http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/a..._2096mod-1.jpg |
Report from the Phila. area
We're in suburban Philadelphia. All public transportantion will be shut down. All schools closed. Mandatory evacuations in designated areas. It's supposed to be a storm of monumental proportions around here...and to think I was worried about moving to "hurricane alley" ...in Florida.

great pix of the jersey shore area http://www.facebook.com/JerseyShoreH...eHurricaneNews
water already at flood stage along the delaware [mercer cty area] and the back bay of cape may - and the storm won't be here until tomorrow! yikes!! state offices closed tomorrow, most schools closed for two days, transit system shutting down by 2am mon morning, local towns have crews out clearing streets of tree limbs/leaves, no bread/water in grocery stores, and looooong lines waiting at box stores and small suppliers for generators! sorry i don't have a facebook page for new yawkers! ;) but i like the abc news storm coverage site Live Hurricane Sandy coverage from Eyewitness News New York on 7online hoping me and all of your family and friends in the path up here stay safe! |
Fire Island the barrier beach on Long Island is now evacuated.
My son has a home on the south shore, on the water, he's packing now, raising all valuables up high. The bay is up about 3.5 feet now and it's not here yet, forecast can put his first floor under water. |

Not to take this storm lightly but it is only a category 1 and it is (as of now) 500 miles from NYC and all the havoc its creating already.
I shutter to think what would happen had this been a stronger hurricane. |
We were in CT for the storm last October. Lost several 100 year old maples on the driveway. The town was shut down for 9 days...no electricity. Took a couple weeks to get all the downed trees cleared. This storm is much worse. They are evacuating all of Fairfield County.
In Villanova PA, they are closing for Monday and Tuesday. Many kids have left campus. This is a monster. When you consider we had winds for 3 days, and it is nowhere near here, it isn't a surprise to think how bad it will be for those who actually in its path. I am really glad we are here. |
My sister and her husband evacuated (they live in NJ) as they are right near a marina and their neighborhood is low lying.
Hopefully everyone will make it through the storm safely. Good luck to all who will be impacted......... |
We are coming down nov. 15th for design meeting and currently living in point pleasant beach , NJ. We have been evacuated...yuch...can't wait to get to tv. Never a dull moment. Hope we will be back in the house by Wednesday or Thursday. Hope we are not punished to much. Wish us luck. Can't wait to be permanent in Fernandina 205.
Hope everyone else in the line of fire the best of luck riding this out. Best to all. Bill & Rona |
The problem..

The back end of the storm is pushing the sea water into Long Island Sound and once in it can't get out against the push of the storm. Add the fact that its a full moon high tide tomorrow night, the potential may be devestating. Tides of 10-11 feet above normal here and nearly as high in NYC are more than problematic. |
May all of those on TOTV who still have homes in the area to be affected by Hurricane Sandy or who have friends and family in the affected area, may you all be safe.

We are in Northern Va, right next to Dulles airport and 45 minutes outside of DC. No school for the next 2 days. No buses/metro/trains/flights for at least tomorrow. My mom was scheduled to come from NJ here on Tuesday and we were catching a plane to TV on Wed for some fun and R&R. Well, that is not happening. Maybe later in the week. Here the worry is power outages. Hoping for the best. Good luck to everyone.

local weather folks have summed it to a short version: cat i hurricane meets strong nor'easter and both combine with awesome cold front - a triple header! not to mention the moon high tides! back bay waters will be meeting the ocean waters! and this is not like a hurricane just sliding northward along side of a coastline - this storm is tracking north and then making a 90 degree left turn into the coastline and heading west and then north again inland only to exit off the coast of maine/canada! while thousands have been evacuated from their homes, those of us who live in more inland areas are concerned for the loss of power which will prevent the operation of sump pumps, residential wells, water authorities going off-line, inability for personal medical equipment to operate for home dialysis, nebulizer treastments and the like and even a few 9-month pregnant women are concerned about a need to get to the hospital! coastal fire depts have been "issued" nat'l guard flatbed trucks so that they could mount at least one major pumper on same so that it will be able to navigate into flood waters and draft out of the waters in order to extinguish a fire. those are not the normal, routine, run-of-the-mill precautions nj usually takes for a hurricane of any proportion or even the last 100 yr storm that went thru! home depots, lowes stores and hardware type stores in new england states [where this storm will head next] have been sold out of generators and have not been able to take delivery of any for the past week because of the deliveries that were directed to their nj stores! they are hoping to get some starting tomorrow! so glad this will be over soon and so afraid of being out of power and water for the 7 - 14 days they predict is likely! ugh! but we're jersey folks and we will cope and rise above! ;) |
Good luck njbchbum. I feel your pain. My neice and her family are in Manhattan's lower east side, one block from Zone A, hunkered down. I am so worried about her and her two adorable boys, ages six and nine. She said they have plenty of food and water, and they live on second floor, but still I worry. My sister is in central PA with a bulls-eye on her, also. Let's all pray that everyone is safe.

From the head of the Chesapeake bay it is rainy with a few good wind gusts but the storm is still far away-at the bottom of the bay the waves are already 15 feet high at ocean city and the flooding in low laying areas has begun-all this and the worst is still a good 24 hrs away!!!! Stay high and stay dry!

Starting to get a constant wind here in RI and electrical outages are starting already. They say it won't start getting "bad" until after 2 PM. All schools and most govt offices are closed. My kite is all ready to fly. Hope it doesn't match the hype
|
Steady 20-30 mph winds this morning driving the hard rain on already saturated land. At this point most people still have power but it won't be long before that starts to change. The one thing that we don't have to worry about are tornadoes. Maryland is not very big so it is amazing that we have a hurricane on the east side and a blizzard warning on the west side!!
No mass transit of any kind at least today and tomorrow-airports will close at 10am. Pictures of the ocean are unreal with waves from 10-18 ft high-looks fantastic but doing big damage to the beaches this morning-this will continue all day long as the storm is still hundreds of miles away. Lower New Jersey to NYC will see the worst of the storm. JIM |

but life is still good here this morning. state is pretty much flooded at the ocean front areas from the tip at cape may county all the way up thru ocean county. some monmouth county towns have minor flooding along their ocean avenues so far today [but high tide is passing] and the low lying areas along the back bays are somewhat flooded, too. that will all likely change tonite when the moon high tide rolls in! hopefully, all but the emergency responders who had to go to wrok today will be home by the time that happens! ciao for now! |
Steady 30-40 gusts higher, 6,000 homes without power and it just started, tide is up to where Irene was already looks like flooding will be the real issue.
Some south shore streets R under water. |
While our neighbors up north will be in our prayer these next couple of day, I hope all Villagers take a moment to thank God for this monster of a storm having not hit us. With it being 700+ miles wide, it certainly would have done tremendous damage to this entire state.
God Bless to all. |
Different
What's different this time, and unique as far as hurricanes go is not it's strength, but the fact that Sandy is following the Gulf Stream north and then will take an almost hard left turn to the west, hitting the coast at a right angle. Something not seen before this far north. Why this is significant is that it will be pushing a record surge along with it, almost directly perpendicular to the shore. Then to make matters worse, it won't just blow through, but rather it will be held in place by a high pressure system off the coast blocking it's exit. It's already is expected to be the most severe storm to ever hit N.J.
Funny, here in NY we always thought of Florida bearing the brunt of these crazy storms. Last year at this time, we had a freak blizzard, this year, a "Frankenstorm", part hurricane, part nor'easter. Ah, to be a FROG.....can't wait. |
Jimbo2012 - where are you on LI?
My son is in Mass. Pk. texted me at 8:50 am and lost power already. Unfortunately the worst is yet to come later this afternoon! STAY SAFE ! |
At 1012 here in Baltimore it's 54 degrees, a steady (but not hard) rain and the wind has picked up a bit from last night. At this point if you didn't know about the storm, you'd just think it was a lousy day.

Wind has increased in the last few hours to 40+, almost no rain. We have a biz located in Copiague next door to your son, also Selden and Carle Pl., all require electric we have big ass generators standing by. Tonite is going to get much worse they say. |
Greenwich CT 1200 without power and the storm hasn't arrived yet.
|
Here in South Jersey
...just praying, praying, praying...
Wish we had retired already and joined you fine folks in TV. Gov. Cristie has mandated that all non-essential personnel be off the roads. Already have had tons of rain and the wind is very intense. So far we haven't lost electricity. We're on the border of Atlantic and Camden Counties. :cus: |
10:42am...the storm has begun its left-hand turn...constant 45mph winds with up to 65mph gusts blowing onshore...thus, high tide waters cannot exit the shoreline...will remain this way thru the day...and will really knock our socks off when the next high tide comes in tonite! wowzaa! likely to be all that has been predicted!
