Anyone Have or Had A Dog With Seizures
 

Does anyone have or had a dog with seizures? Our dog was laying on her bed while we were watching tv. I looked over and noticed her head was hanging off the bed. She looked like she was trying to right herself. I got down to help her and saw that her head was bobbing around, her back feet were twitching, her eyes were crazy, and you know how a dog looks when they are curled up....she was curled the wrong direction. Yikes, that was scarey. Told my husband we had to get to the emergency vet right now. About halfway there she was fine. My husband decided to go back home and to wait and see if it ever happens again. I am assuming it was a seizure. Unless someone knows what else it could be. We never experienced anything like this before. We were just wondering if anyone else had gone through anything like this?

Our 8 year old lab has had seizures that on average occur about twice a year. This started about 4 years ago. We had him checked and the only thing the vets could find was that his thyroid numbers were off and he is on thyriod medicine. I would recommend your dog be checked. Even though a seizure may only last one to three minutes or so the dog goes though a lot during the episode and a cause for them should be diagnosed. Good luck. Hope this helps.

Had a dog years ago who had epilepsy.

He would stiffen up, shake and his eyes would bulge - he look terrified.

We would basically comfort him and after a short time he would calm down and come out of it. He was then exhausted for the remainder of the day.

Can't recall how often this happened - it was many years ago.

I have a dog with seizures. He actually started them when we first moved here three years ago. For the most part they are under control. He is on phenobarbitol and potassium bromide as he has cluster seizures. Occasionally he relapses around stress.
If I were you, I would still take her to the vet to get her checked. Write down what happened and for how long, etc. BTW: Certain breeds have a sensitivity to Ivermectin which is in Heart Guard.

It was made by Purina but I don't remember which one We now use a higher end dog food by Nutrena called Loyall We buy it at Sparks on Rt 44

Yes, Purina has had some issues.

We had a dog that had diabetes that had seizures but it was after a long illness.

Could be food, from some of the news lately. Hope that's it.

We lost a dog years ago to epilepsy. He had occasional seizures for several years, until finally he was unable to recover. It was only a couple times per year, with only slightly increasing frequency, and he lived to a reasonably decent age.

Just curious, how long has it been since your dog is back on the old food?

Our Yorkie had a seizure when she was young and it scared us. Long before we got her to emergency vet across from Leesburg airport, she came out of it. Vet advised us to put her on small dose of liquid phenobarbital. She was on it for some time and only twice afterwards did she have another episode. Since we knew what was happening we just kept her comfortable and spoke calmly and she came out of the seizure. Believe that some breeds are more susceptible to seizures.

My dog has seizures about once every three weeks. He's white and white dogs can carry a gene for seizures. He got the gene. The seizures are mild, but too frequent. The goal is once every six weeks. He is on phenobarbital and Keppra. When he has a seizure, I just pet him and talk calmly to him. Don't know what gets through to him, but it's the best I can think of. Otherwise he's a very happy active eight-year-old poodle mix.

I had a 12 year old dog who started having seizures. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
It could be something treatable or something more serious.
I agree with the recommendation to involve your Vet.

Oddly enough earlier when I responded to this post our Bailey had an episode . My wife was with him s nd I was out in the garage playing music so I didn't her yell for me. Minutes later he acts like nothing happened and joined me outside. When he experiences these spells I usually get on the floor with him and talk to him thru it. He reacts to my voice but you can tell they are confused.
