Decision, decisions.

Thinking of moving to TV. Have done the lifestyle deal and was impressed. Doing financial research now and also medical.
The medical is pretty scary from what I see. Currently live near Charlotte and have access to Duke, Wake Forrest, etc. Real quality health care near TV is pretty weak from what I see. Please give me your thoughts and experiences. As with everything else, if nothing is wrong it doesn't matter but have a problem, oh boy!

A search on this site will bring up more threads than you will want to read. Most of the comments will just be repeated here.

Orlando has fabulous specialists. I drive like a old woman so I always say I it takes 90 minutes. Young whipper snappers probably say 50 minutes. When you are tbere, you can go to Costco and trader joes and eat at different restaurants. We love The Villages. I don't believe I will ever regret the decision to move here.

Maybe. I do drive a white car. On a recent trip to California, I drove the entire way in the left lane going 5 miles under the speed limit. I can't tell you how many friends I made. Everyone honked and waved. Fabulous trip.

Love you, Joyce, but WHY, oh WHY would you do that??? Just to pi$$ off everyone else on the road? I'm sure some of the "waves" were with one finger, not the whole hand. And in some states you can get a ticket for not keeping up with traffic in the left lane, even if that traffic is going above the speed limit. You may also get a ticket for failure to stay to the right. You also endanger everyone else on the road as irate motorists engage in a mad scramble to get around you, sometimes in a less than safe manner. Why not stay right except to pass? (although at that speed on I-10 you will not be passing anyone)

Sarcasm, Sheldon. Sarcasm.

Back to the original question, contact SHINE (do a search on the word SHINE), they will give you lots of information on the health system in FL.

Back to the original question: There was no TVH prior to 2012, so all the bally-hoo is a recent development. Prior to that, TV was just like any other community---you talked to friends and neighbors and chose a doctor. The tertiary care centers are in Orlando, Tampa, Gainesville and Jacksonville. If you have a concern over the quality of healthcare in TV, then you really are questioning the quality in all of Florida. Everything in life is a trade off, some places have better restaurants, some have better shopping. If extremely high quality healthcare with a "recognized" name is important to you, there should no problem buying in the inner city slum of Baltimore, right next to Johns Hopkins. I prefer it here; even at age 22 I declined the opportunity to go there for 4+ years, preferring the slum I knew in Brooklyn to the unknown slum.

Best decision I ever made as you feel younger with so many things to do!

Health care isn't as bad as some people make it sound. My brother goes to Duke University for a heart problem so unless you have serious medical issues, I would move down.

The big brouhaha is over TVH system will no longer accept Medicare with supplement type patients starting in 2017. A lot of people are upset because they need to find doctors outside of TVH and some feel they were thrown out of TVH system.

TVH is concierge type medical system that allows a lot of time for their patients that accepts UHC MA plans and Tricare for Life. Call 352.674.1740 for an exact answer on whether they will accept you.

I personally don't find the the health care down in Florida that bad and I came from the tri-sate area of the northeast. I understand the reluctance of moving from an area that has the best doctors to doctors in Florida but everything in life has an element of risk.

My personal complaint is with dentists as they seem to want to overcharge you for a simple cleaning. Still having a problem finding a honest dentist that accepts UHC MA plan.

Good post. Good points. Smart dude.

Thanks folks. Have done all kinds of searches and just seem to get either rah, rah, rah, or nay, nay, nay, not much logical and concise info.
Will look at SHINE as I have not seen that yet. The hunt is still on.
And golfing eagles, not sure if you're joking or not, but me thinks questioning anything anywhere is something an individual should do. Not criticism, but educating myself. If you can tell what will happen in the future, may God bless you!!!
As for cranky old me, I don't have that ability.
Keep posting folks I appreciate all the info.

Never said you shouldn't question it. Truth be told, when I was in NY, Florida medicine was the butt of many a joke. But there are good physicians down here and they are not too hard to find.

I will predict this for the future: Healthcare delivery will change, maybe soon after inauguration day. The "old" system worked fine for 85-90% of the population, but it left about 40 million people out in the cold. They could get the care they needed, but if they had any assets, they were bankrupted. By virtue of the "consequences of an election" in 2008, America decided the system needed to change. Personally, I agreed, but as usual, the devil is in the details. What we instituted is not viable in the long term, hence the prediction for future change. People resist change--hence all the consternation regarding TVH insurance decision. But fasten your seatbelt, it will change again.
