Would like to see NYC again but how safe is it now a days?

I know many here in TV are originally from NY and eastcoast so I'm sure there will be some good input...

It's been a looooong time since I visited NYC and always wanted to go back.

Is it true that NYC is getting very dangerous?

Have you been there recently? How safe did you feel?

Would be interesting to hear from those of you that grew up in NYC...and what your thoughts are on this subject. Also I've always been fascinated by the history of NYC so share stories of growing up there please if you would. :)

TIA

I would not go there unarmed...hope that answers your question.

Statistics show that NYC is safer than many of the big cities in Florida. Of course it is not safer than The Villages where most of the residents are too old to commit crime.

I went once, that's enough.

Going in May. Historically, always super vigilant in NYC, this trip will be no different. It’s never been Disney World nor Mayberry but it’s a great city to visit. I’m usually in Greenwich Village or Little Italy anyway so I would be disappointed if I didn’t see a little underbelly of society on my way there. Don’t be scared off....just be aware

Lol...thanks! I knew I could count on TV forum to be brutally honest.

That's where my friends and I would hang out. Was a lot of fun!

But I was much younger then and had quicker reflexes if there was trouble. :duck:

I went last year for a few days. It’s crazy crowded anyplace a tourist would go. It didn’t seem unsafe. At least not from a violence perspective. Watch out for scammers and pick pokets. Don’t go down any dark alleys.

You should be fine but dont wander away by yourself with nobody around

NYC crime rate statistics are available in an easy to read format HERE

Crime Stats - Historical - NYPD

Realist assessment of the risk is discussed

FACT FOCUS: NYC crime is not worst ever, despite claims | AP News

You can compare relative crime rates of every major city in the US one against the other here:

2024 Compare Crime Rates

Ocala is much more dangerous than NYC.
Leesburg is much more dangerous than NYC.

Orlando is much more dangerous than NYC.
Peoria IL is much more dangerous than NYC.
Phoenix is much more dangerous than NYC.

I know certain news media loves to attack and endlessly play videos of crimes but NYC is safer than most cities in the US.

There is an old saying, "you can't go home". Everything changes over time.

Compare The Villages to NYC! Not sure I believe that...

Had to go there frequently during my working days. Now retired, don’t have to go there anymore, and won’t ever return. Way too many people in too small of a place.
