Sad to report - golf cart theft....
 

Our little neighborhood consists of 5 streets and one of our "family" had their golf cart stolen today, from their garage.

When they went out to get the newspaper this morning, around 5:30AM, they accidently left the garage door open. A neighbor thinks they saw the cart in the garage at 6:30. When the cart owner went out to the garage around 7:30, they saw that the cart, on which sat a set of clubs, was gone.

I'm so sad for the loss and wanted to let the TOTV community aware of what happened. This was in Caroline.

omigosh Pooh. That is awful. Who would have even noticed that the door was open??? And at that time of the morning too. That is scary.

It would take two persons or one on foot.........???

Pretty brazen burglar to push a golf cart out of an open garage and down the street - all without anyone noticing something strange - a person pushing a golf cart down the street is definitely out of the usual. I would think someone would have seen this as strange and called Community Watch.
Lots of people walk on our streets for their morning walk between 6:30 and 7:30 but not pushing a golf cart.

The owner didn't have his key in the golf cart, did he?

Someone posted on here the keys are interchangeable!

We leave our key in ours. I think most people do.

What do people do with their carts when they have their garages painted?

I would think you will not leave keys in the cart anymore. I hope you do not leave your car keys in the car while it is parked in the garage (do not answer). I do not think the keys are interchangable. (I just looked at the thread on Yamaha keys and there is dispute whether or not the keys are interchangable.)

Leaving the garage door open with keys in the golf cart is ... well, I will not finish that statement.

Sorry a person learned the hard way for a very preventable loss.

Someone parks a cart at our mail drop a lot. It is there night and day. It has not been taken.

Don't you wonder how this happened? To just happen on an open garage and be with another person and steal it ...or be on foot at that hour of the day??? It was definitely a crime of opportunity. Wonder what they will do with it? Do you think it was a villager?

I did not know the keys are interchangeable. I never have left the key in the cart, but just the thought of someone coming into the gargage to check is scary. I'm glad to be made more aware.

I don't know that they are either. Someone posted it. Don't know that it's true.

Now that you mention this cart, I know that people leave their carts at the Enterprise car rental in LSL over night and they don't seem to be bothered. Is it just good luck?

I am so sorry to hear this. We all feel violated when a neighbor is burglarized!

It does sound like a crime of opportunity. I am not understanding though why people assume it would have required two people to steal the cart. It was supposed to have been parked in a locked garage-- the garage door was left open by mistake. So it wouldn't be surprising if the key was in the ignition. Anyone on foot could have driven off with the cart. If two people happened by in a car, one person could have gotten out and taken the cart.

I do hope the thief is caught.

Ask someone with your make of cart to try and start your cart your cart with their key and you will be surprised to find that they can take it for a ride.

It matters not that you remove your key.

You need a kill switch and need to set it every time you leave your cart.

It's normal for golf carts to come with "universal" keys. Unique keys are often an option. I don't know how anyone could feel secure leaving their cart anywhere if they have a universal key. A couple of years ago there was a rash of thefts from the Mulberry shopping center area. In every case I heard of, the thieves used their own key and drove the cart away. No doubt to a secluded place where they just ramped it up onto a truck.
Also, we've all heard stories of garage doors inadvertently opening. My understanding is it's a common situation observed by community watch. If people have unique keys for their carts, how many leave them in the ignition when they are home?
