walkin' the dog

the recent leash thread and the multitude of poop threads in this forum have made me wonder...why do dog owners take their dogs for their am/pm constitutional BEFORE they have taken care of business instead of AFTER they have used their OWN property for same. growing up with our dogs, not one of us was allowed to take the dog off property until AFTER they were properly relieved. just wonderin'......

asianthree 08-31-2012 06:02 PM

then we would not have a poop thread:girlneener: then what would we write about

Probably because of the fact that so few Villages homes have fences. Most of the dogwalkers in our neighbor clean up after their pets when they walk them.

gomoho 08-31-2012 06:25 PM

sorry, but my dogs need to walk before they can do their business - can only walk around in circles so many times in your yard - I feel fortunate we have a pump station area where they can relieve themselves, I can pick it up, and no harm done!

if you take them to yoga, it works faster than walking:1rotfl:

Not having a fence is not a reason, it's an excuse. We have two dogs in a designer with an invisible fence. The dogs stay in our yard with either my wife or me outside with them until they take care of business. The dogs know the routine so it's no problem at all. There's no way I'd walk dogs and let them use a neigbor's yard for a latrine. That's just rude and inconsiderate. Your dog should use your yard and only your yard.

Bogie Shooter 08-31-2012 08:34 PM

Wasn't all this dog poop business solved just a month ago?

rmcpklinefelter 08-31-2012 09:54 PM

...but I DO have my DeeDee relieve herself BEFORE I walk her...when she can cooperate!

CFrance 08-31-2012 10:13 PM

My dog can make it around the neighborhood fine without peeing. I, however...

Excellent Bluedog, as a dog owner we also never allowed our dog to mess in other peoples yards, dog urine especially females can kill grass..

Second that. We walk our dog in the landscaping. (That tells you something about the standard number of shrubs provided in a spec home!) Took about two days before he caught on that we weren't going anywhere till he peed. Now it's ritual for him. We don't want him killing our grass, let alone someone else's. When we get around to doing some more landscaping, there will be a dedicated spot for him. Poop's different--you can pick that up and no harm done to the grass.

We take our dog on a golf cart ride after he does his business in our yard. Like you say dogs understand and like a routine. Remember, you must be the pack leader to give you pet a happy life.

We have a hundred or more new folks moving in each month and may not know the rules.

Now that's funny!

Taltarzac725 09-01-2012 06:55 AM

Cannot say that I can tell the rule following dog owners by all the dead spots in their lawns due to female dogs peeing. Bushes are kind of hard to pee in for female pooches. So, most dog owners with female canines in the Villages would have dead spots from the urine. I have noticed dead spots in lawns but they look like it's from cinch bugs.

My dog usually pees at Doggie Doo Run Run. The only good sized dog park anywhere near the Villages. The dog parks do have spots of dead grass from where many dogs have peed over many days.

Yes, but further to CFrance's comment, some old dogs need to go more than once and although they have relieved themselves dutifully and responsibly before they have left the comfort of their own domain, the excitement? the joy? the relaxation? of the walk brings on another moment when they need to relieve themselves. It happens ...to the best of us.

784caroline 09-01-2012 08:14 AM

As a dog owner who walks the dog, I ALWAYS relive myself before I go for a walk.

Taltarzac725 09-01-2012 08:34 AM

My pooch has to mark his territory while taking a walk by going at every other place some other dog has pee'd. So, I rarely take him on walks in Lynnhaven because he has to stop and pee every ten feet. It takes a half hour to go 600 yards unless he is all out of pee.

Seldom though are there any bald spots on lawns where all these neighborhood dogs have been marking their territory.

That's why you have you dog on a leash, so you can control where they go. Our dogs may want to go an a neighbor's lawn to explore or whatever but they're not allowed to

shcisamax 09-01-2012 10:33 AM

Have you ever seen a dog being pulled along on a leash and peeing simultaneously? If they have to go, they go. As for my comment, I think that is why they make a product called Depends because some people can't control themselves either. Maybe we should put the Depends on the dogs when they go walking. This thread has really gotten watered down to the lowest common denominator. Time to move on.

Really do not believe that people that say their dogs never pee in others' yards here in the Villages. Unless you have an invisible fence and keep your dogs at home all the time; there is no way a dog will not pee somewhere where he or she smells another dog's urine.

bluedog103 09-01-2012 12:53 PM

Our dogs DO NOT use neighbors' yards for a latrine. I don't have these 30 ft. leashes, we use an ordinary leash so I control where the dogs go. We have one small dog and one large one. If I don't allow them on a lawn they don't go there. This is not a difficult concept. I control the dogs, they are never in command. What they want to do and what they're allowed to do are not the same.

Didiwinbob 09-01-2012 12:58 PM

There is a product that can be placed on a dog that catches the pee. I've seen this used on unnumbered males in fostered situations.

Thanks for injecting some humor into this thread. This topic sure gets old fast.

It's been said that if aliens from outer space were watching us and saw people walking their dogs, who do you think they would think is the master? The one in front or the one behind with a plastic bag picking up for the one in front?

And, the ones who often get dogs**t pushed into our faces if we are too eager to bend down in pick up the poop while the dog does its little "just pooped" dance. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huI6_Uc35dM[/ame]

There are several of these dogs doing the poop dance on YouTube.

Sounds like they have glands in their feet which they use to mark their territory after they poop or pee.

Count me as one you can believe. I cannot imagine any dog I have owned (past the age of puppy when they do not understand some basic rules) that would leave my side to pee during a walk. If one of my dogs 'tried' to leave my side, it is a signal to me they REALLY need to go and we find a place as soon as we can, but never someone's yard. Maybe I am lucky....

You are lucky and your doggy is lucky and so cute too from your avatar picture.

Parents who are praised about nice children frequently say they are lucky. I, being an ex teacher, feel durned sure that more times than not it is a lot to do with good parenting.

Good for you. Many of the neighborhoods in the Villages offer either the street, people's lawns, or the postal centers as places for pooches to pee.

My dog usually goes to a local dog park in the mornings to do his business. No dog park anywhere near the Villages is open past dusk though.

No, neither have I. But you never know what's under those cute little doggie outfits. The fact that they actually sell doggie diapers is shocking to me.... but somebody must be buying them.

Dogs (just like people) can become incontinent due to age, injury or disease. I think that is the primary market for them, although people who are having house training/marking problems with their dogs might use them as well.
