Is this really his last, best chance...at winning it?

While he has a record 6 runner-up finishes (some quite tragic/dumb), finally winning the U.S. Open would make him only the 6th person...to complete the "Career Grand Slam."

There was Payne and the pager at Pinehurst.

There was a near-miss at Merion.

To list all of Phil Mickelson's close calls, meltdowns and shortfalls at the U.S. Open is to peer into a particularly tortured chapter of the history of one of golf's greatest champions.

More uplifting are the stories from Mickelson's five tour victories at Pebble Beach - including one earlier this year.

It's what makes Mickelson's trip next week to Pebble all that much more tantalizing. It's his chance to finally win the tournament he's wanted so badly - maybe too badly - at a course teeming with history and good vibes for not only himself, but for his family and for the game itself. It's a week during which the five-time major winner, who turns 49 on the day of the final round, will come face to face with what could be his last, best chance to win the U.S. Open.

And become the sixth player to complete the career Grand Slam.

While I'll be rooting for 'Lefty and would love to see him win (especially with it being at Pebble)...I wouldn't put money on it.

Very, very...

With it being Pebble, Phil winning there earlier this year (plus Sunday being his 49th B'Day), Tiger winning this year's Masters and Koepka going for his third straight U.S. Open...the tournament should be electric.

Just checked long range temps. Will be about 60* Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Have to check to see if I have enough pairs of pants! Got rid of most of them when we moved down here. Will be sunny though. That’s the big thing.

Ok. Just hopped into bed after a loooong travel day. Was up at 6, so have been up for about 18 hrs, most of which seemed to be on planes. Heading to Monterey Aquarium Friday. We have tix for Saturday/Sunday at Pebble Beach, so that will start golf commentary.

Flew into San Jose, where I have never been. Staying in Morgan Hill, where hotel is $100/night. Any closer, the rooms started at around $350/night. Didn’t think about the hills around here. Just so pretty! Here’s a pic after we got on the 101 at the airport.

Took 156west off the 101 to get to Hwy 1. Two lane highway packed with cars at 10:30 AM. Timing drive for tomorrow. Lots of agriculture through here. I know you want to get GOLF play by play, but since we’re not there yet, ...

I've spent a fair amount of time in the area and can just imagine how much traffic must be on the relatively small roads around there right now.

If you're looking for something to do in the evenings, Cannery Row in Monterey is pretty cool to walk around/eat/shop.

And the Monterey Bay Aquarium...is world class.
