In that case, they would need to change the tournament name, unless they have changed the definition of an open tournament. When a golf tournament uses the name "open" in the title, it means that any golfer can compete for the available spaces in it. The same would apply to the U.S. Open.

If you have to ask you're not very informed

I am watching it on tv. It is about 1:20 pm in Scotland and the weather is great but the stands are remarkably empty. At the 1st and 18th holes, they appear to be about half full. Would never see that at the Masters.

Same here!! DJ in first place and Taylor Gooch just two shots behind him. It forces the biased PGA Tour commentators to talk about them. 😂

Nope. And he won’t be playing this weekend. Sad to say that. He’s hurting, but so good to see the GOAT try. Will prob be his last Open, esp at the Old Course.

I am watching the Open. There are five players named Kim.

Chan Kim
Joohyung Kim
Minkyu Kim
Si Woo Kim
Sihwan Kim

It would be great if they all got into a 5 way playoff!!

In 2009, at the age of 59, Tom Watson lost in a playoff. He was a prior champion. Some of the fans likely enjoy seeing the prior winners. No reason to turn them away.

It was the behavior of a high school Sophomore, who had his girlfriend stolen by a Senior.

On the other hand, the R&A did the right thing with regards to Mark Calcavecchia.

Agree with what you said.

Still can not determine how this new "league" is going to make money especially with the guarantees to mostly newcomers and players out of their prime lack of sponsors, lack of TV contract, competition with the PGA tour, tournaments not in prime time with the US, 54 hole shotgun starts tournaments, crazy perks.....

Wonder if Mr. Norman has a personal financial stake in this.

The LIV (or 54) controversy appears to be about Saudi Arabia and the fact that they don’t live up to our standards on human rights. Neither does China and many other countries but for some reason, the PGA and R&A seem to have a different standard for Saudi Arabia.
However, the US buys billions of dollars of oil from the Saudis and the US president was there yesterday trying to get more oil.

Some on the PGA say that it isn’t about the money but it is the principle,

When someone says, 'It ain't the money but the principle of the thing,' it's the money.

Personally, I have no problem w/any golfer joining the LIV. This is not like baseball, where you sign a 5 year, 30 million contract to play. In golf, if you don't make cuts or whatever, you don't make any money. So if they want to go for the money, so be it.

Looks to be an historic low-score day for Day 3 there. Weather conditions ripe for low 60’s scoring by some there.

With all the scenes from SA I would love to go visit, amazing. And walk a course. Just walk, no ball-hitting. I get enough grief with TV courses.

BTW I will miss Nick Faldo color commentaries when he retires soon. Love him.

There are no cuts in LIV golf. You show up, you get paid.
