First of all, doctors have been taught to put patients in stage 3,4, and 5 CRF on a 40 gram protein diet for at least 60 years. However, the investigational evidence for this has historically been suspect. It originated in the 60's with the observation that Tibetan monks on a rice only (extremely low protein) diet had lower rates of CRF. Of course, they often didn't live long enough for the data to be valid, and since they were all genetically Tibetan, the relevance to Americans was questionable.

Recent studies can be summarized here:

Low-protein diets have historically been used to slow CKD progression, but recent high-quality evidence shows that overly restrictive intake (<0.6 g/kg/day) may increase risks of kidney failure and mortality, while moderate restriction (~0.8 g/kg/day) is now favored in many guidelines

Recent prospective cohort evidence:
A 2026 cohort study of 1,861 non‑dialysis CKD patients found that the lowest daily protein intake (<0.6 g/kg/day) was associated with a 42% higher risk of kidney failure (subdistribution hazard ratio 1.42) and more than double the risk of all‑cause mortality (sHR 2.17) compared with the highest intake (>1.2 g/kg/day)

The authors attributed this to protein‑energy wasting and sarcopenia, especially in populations with lower muscle mass. They concluded that excessive restriction may harm outcomes and that maintaining adequate nutrition is as important as reducing kidney workload

And lastly:

Animal protein eventually death sentence?
Animal protein eventually death sentence???
Animal protein eventually death sentence????????

I must not be posting here, since all mankind should be extinct given our Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon ancestors chowing down on Mastodon and Wooly Mammoth meat.
I will add not long ago, as in Not....WARNINGS on Eggs were harmful. Never stops.

My understanding is the American Indians did very well on eating meat. Correct me if I am mistaken.

You are correct. And correct for every species of the family Hominini since Australopithecus africanus, 2.6 million years ago. Yep, amazing we are still here given the "deadly" consequences of eating animal proteins

Multi generational maternal/paternal Native American.. one cannot group the diet of Natives…just like any race, environment determines diet.

Those living near lakes fished along with multiple vegetables, herbs for treatment. Near forests, Turkey, bear, deer dried or smoked to sustain winters. Just as Native Alaskan smoke meat and salmon today.

Stews prepared every morning predominantly squash, corn, beans, masa for bread. Meat was an enhancement, when available usually in small quantities. Hunting was a need to survive winter….not a sport.

As a family we documented my Great Grandmother’s recipes that she commented to memory from generations of tribal community. Great Grandfather generational Healer also documented herbs, barks, and methods of use. We still use some of the practices today. My grandfather was the last healer in our family

None of my family forced on reservations, farming was main source of food. Bureau of Indian Affairs lists our 3 tribes of more than 500.

So to answer your question meat usually not main dietary staple, due to lack of hunting availability

Interesting. But if I remember, The US Army sent out Buffalo Bill and others to indiscriminately kill bison in order to starve out the Plains Native Americans who were almost entirely dependent on the buffalo. Nasty tactic, almost as bad as infecting blankets with Variola major (smallpox)

I realize that some not many % wise have to, but honestly many, many fall for it along with this " Gluten Free " , nonsense.

Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Ribeye, Bologna, Ham, Salami, Meatballs, etc. Not to forget " Rye Bread Oh Yeah.
U make a good point. Honestly, to each their own. Just read one of my financial hero’s who is 96 years old eats at McDonald’s quite often. Like I said, to each their own is a good motto.
