Speaking of errant posts, sorry about the hijacking. What were we talking about?

I am certainly familiar with them now, but the nuances sometimes escape me. What is the best thing to buy, say, at a good New York deli???

When I was a kid they sold lunch meat and some salads at the butcher shop. I never heard of or ate a bagel until I was twenty something.

And probably New Yorkers didn't have mock turtle soup and Goetta.

There are a lot of things that are still unfamilar when I go to a real deli.

What is YOUR favorite thing??
These are not really delis down here. They are hoagie/submarine shops. They use that name to attract customers.

You will never find fresh garlic pickles or salads at these places.

To dear friends and our avatars!

BTW, I agree with Z about mere sandwich shops calling themselves delis.

True NY'ers:
1. would either say May I or Please in the same sentence, but never both.
2. would never say deli Stuff but would say "Da Werks".

So I guess this means that they are finally open for business
I was beginning to wonder if they were ever going to open.

Glad to hear a positive review. I'll have to give them a try.

Yes, Gandolfos opened today and of course we gave it a try. GREAT in every way. I agree texasfal, a half was plenty large enough. I tried the "Little Italy" and my husband had something called " 42nd Street". Both of us were VERY satisfied with the quality and quantity.

We went today for lunch and loved the sandwiches. HOWEVER, when we arrived home and looked at the receipt, we were astonished to find out that we were charged for "extra" salt and pepper and olive oil to the tune of 10 cents each! Doesn't sound like much, but nickeling and diming like this will surely put people off. And, yes, I did call them and was told that this is their policy. Looks like we'll be going back to Jersey Mike's!

I have never heard of such a thing!!! Not a good way to start up business, especially in a big place like The Villages. I am so stunned by this....guess I better zip it lol lol.

P.S. I have always wanted to use the mad faces lol lol, thanks mac9 .
