The Publix brand markets natural casing beef franks that are respectable.

The key to a good hot dog is the lips to ears ratio.

The vendor at Home Depot told me he gets hot dogs from Michigan, which has traditionally had the toughest standards in the country for processed meats. Of course, that appeals to me as I originally hail from Michigan and I did find when I moved out of state that the local hot dogs just didn't come close to what I was used to. Whatever brand they are, they are a decent dog. True, they are no Koegel's Vienna with Natural Casings (the best of the best in Michigan-based hot dogs, IMHO) and they really should be grilled, but for down here in the Sunshine State, they ain't half bad. But I guess it's like anything else - whatever you grew up with is what tastes best for you.

To give you an idea how crazy Michiganders are about their Koegel's hot dogs, Koegel's sends down trucks twice a year to tour the south and sell hot dogs, bologna and other processed meats of their (and Coney sauce for the dogs) and us Michigan transplants line up to buy everything they have.

Koegel Meats Recipes

I will have to check that out. I seem to recall getting one of these hot dogs at some point over the 12 years we have been in the Villages.

No big deal. We have a number of Villages friends and neighbors who are from Michigan.

Another vote for the TP hot dog cart across 466 from Laurel Manor rec center. He uses Sabrett's and his dogs make me think of street vendors in NYC.
