Default Golf Cart Keys?

Are Yamaha Golf Cart keys all the same? What about other brands?

yes , most brands have a "common key". think at a country club with100s of carts, so 1 key fits all. when you buy a new cart you ask for a custom key.

You can get unique key switch set and replace in dash, on my 2013 G29 took about 5 mins. On mine took dash screw out lifted das cup holder out, unplugged the ignition switch loosen/removed jam-nut. Reverse process, came with two keys. 8 years ago at time was around 35 bucks? Don’t know how drive 2s/quitetecs are set up, can’t be too hard. Just make sure get model switch for you series year cart?

The other option is to buy an automotive universal ignition switch, a few years ago these were around $15 and came with 4 unique keys, these work very well for the TWO wire Yamaha switches, however i have not had the opportunity to try this with the 4 wire switches.

I bought some generic Yamaha Drive2 golf card keys online through amazon. The keys were advertised to fit all carts. They did not fit my 2019 Yamaha Drive2 golf cart, which was purchased through Village Golf Cars.

I didn't ask for a custom key when I bought my cart. Maybe I got one anyway. Maybe everyone has custom keys. Has anyone tried their Yamaha key on someone elses cart?

Default One key... many carts

Excerpt from a current news report:

...Four suspects, including (name removed), had been at Cody’s Original Roadhouse at Brownwood, when two members of the group suggested taking golf carts for a “joy ride.” They found four golf carts outside and one of them had a key in the ignition. They used the same key to start up four golf carts. Each member of the quartet took a different golf cart.

For Yamahas, you can buy a plug and play unique keyed ignition switch, with two keys, for both the drive and drive2 (quiet tech) models for $45 from power equipment man dot com. All it takes to install it is the correct size Allen wrench and about 5 minutes. The Yamaha wiring harness fits perfectly into the new ignition switch. I put one in both our 2014 drive and our 2022 drive2. Before the ignition switch swap, the same key worked in both carts, as well as just about every other Yamaha in the Villages. It’s well worth the $45 and 5 minutes of your time.

How could that be possible? In order to use a golf cart, the key has to be in the ignition and turned on. How do you do that, with four carts and one key all at the same time?

We have 2 Yamaha carts, a 2021 and a 2022 purchased at Villages Golf Carts. The key for each cart is unique, and the key for one will not work in the other.

I was told by a golf course owner there are 4 master keys for yamaha. I have 2 yamaha gas carts and that is why i bought 2 go cart switches from amazon that were keyed alike and changed them out. Very easy to do about 1/ 2 hour per cart

Villages Golf Carts uses unique keys in all new and refurbished carts. That being said, There is a limited number of unique keys available so there still can be duplication (I believe less than 500).

Any and all carts purchased from The Villages Cart stores are NOT the universal key that come from Yamaha. They are all dedicated keys to the cart, installed by TVGC Stores. My understanding is that there are over 100 possibilities.
