Since you've gotten such a helpful reply already...

We use a Litter Robot. I think it's the "4" which was last year's model. It's not cheap ($600?), but when we bought it we had 2 cats and the maintenance of the boxes was a lot. With one cat, you can go quite a while before you need to empty it and the area where the waste goes is sealed, so you wouldn't know there was a cat in the house. It helps to keep the litter from being flung around, too, as it's pretty self-contained and difficult for the cat(s) to make an extra mess.

YMMV. My wife likes it as she's primarily responsible for clean-up.

Auto litter boxes have worked well for 15 years, changing to the next best when box died.
Litter robot was great until it wasn’t, due to aging feline. Our 5 pound Himalayan soon to be 19, lost most of her sight last year. She doesn’t navigate traveling up a ramp, any more, so we went back to no lip indoor system.

We looked into buying one some years back when we still had our Kitty. Pretty expensive ($400?) and had a reputation of not lasting, though that was ten years ago or so and the technology has probably improved. We got by with the old standby cat box and clumping litter, cleaning it every evening. The cleaning itself got to be sort of a ritual. I'd say, "let's clean your cat box, Kitty" and she'd run to where it was located, "supervising" while I cleaned it out.

The best thing I ever did was install a motion sensing ceiling fan right over the litter box. You would be amazed how much of a difference that makes. People that don't have cats have been to our home for the first time and don't know we have a cat until they see one.

The cat walks to the litter box, the fan turns on and runs for a preset time (I have mine at 60 seconds), then turns off.

I have a litter robot and a meowant. I prefer the meowant. It is cheaper, smaller, and quieter.

Then their sense of smell isn't working. Litter box helps, but cats "scent-mark" everything. It's what they do.
Like "secret smokers". No one wants to blow their cover and tell them they stink. Let them live their smoke-free, cat free fantasy.
