Default Moving and need advice

Within the next couple of months, when our house sells, we’ll be moving, from the south Jersey Shore to a house in the Village of Del Mar. We are selling our house in Ocean City furnished and will only have boxes to move and a few small items like ladders and step ladders and the like. Our garage is about half full of boxes, so when I say boxes, I mean a lot of boxes! We’re too old to Self Move, so we need to get advice from Villagers who have experience so we can find a company that can handle a move like this from New Jersey (Cape May County) to The Villages. Any advice from folks who have done a move like this will be greatly appreciated. We thought when we moved from our family home on Long Island after 31 years to the beach we had a lot of stuff, but we are shocked that we still have so much “stuff” after giving to children, donating, and throwing away to move from the beach house. Thanks for your help!

I moved here from a 5-bedroom house in Virginia to a small courtyard villa. I sold the house and everything in it, using a liquidation company. I totally started over. It was one of the best things I ever did.

Good for you, but obviously not the situation we find ourselves in.

We used the U-Haul PODS which were cheaper than the actual PODS company. Get a company to load it for you at your current home and have it shipped to the Villages. In our case, they ship it to the U-haul storage place for temp or full time storage. If you can time it they maybe able to drop at your new home. Once it gets here there are people you can hire to unload into your garage from the POD sitting in your driveway (I see Facebook posts for these people).

This is great advice and more seniors should take the opportunity to purge their "stuff"
before their move.

Many people come down here and realize there's no basements, pay a mover, store everything
in their garage with their car parked in the driveway only to sell it all later on.

We did the same thing with u-haul moving containers. Not only was it the least expensive, it turned out to be pretty low-stress and flexible. We hired people on both ends to load & unload. Since we weren't 100% sure of the timing, we stored them both where we moved from as well as in Leesburg.

It's also helpful because you may not know how many units you will need until the moving starts. If you order an extra one you don't need, you just return it.

We moved from Virginia. We only took some living room pieces in addition to all the boxes you talk about. We used JK Movers, a national company with a good reputation and they did a fine job. Their unpacking wasn't rushed and everything was undamaged.

Sentimentality versus logic, makes for an exhausted brain by the end of the day. We are moving this month, house sell date is July 31,st, and since the TV house is currently furnished, we are only moving clothes, some housewares, a few pieces of furniture, and the garage tools.

We are using PODS, either an 8 footer or a 16 footer is available for the trip. Our 16 footer, the second one as we pre-moved alot of stuff last September, is costing about $5,000 because we missed the summer 20% off sale, which we didn't miss last summer. So, you will figure about that much as an estimate for you.

However, if everything is all boxed up, that is excellent, and ask PODS about packing labor and unpacking labor.. They may have some references. . South Jersey is nice, have driven through on trips from MA to TV, and have taken the ferry several times. Would have liked to vacation there in the summer, but never could get organized for that.

good luck with your move.

Pretty sure those services are just references to third-party movers, for people interested in buying a new home. Not for people who've already bought a pre-owned home and already have a listing agent on contract for their New Jersey home.

When we moved our daughter's family, we used Uhaul, and also hired hands to load and unload directly from Uhaul at a pretty reasonable cost--they are subcontractors. Supposedly they pre-screen these labor folks and I will say, both groups did a fantastic job.

I’m halfway up the state North near Asbury Park and I got quoted around $4000 for 16 foot pod to bring a few dining room pieces down. No labor was quoted. “Get ready to ruuumble!”

I worked in the moving industry for 50 years before retiring. Your choices are simple. Number one you can hire a professional mover to move it down. Number two you can get a hold of Pods and hire a crew to help them load the boxes it’s really up to you which service you want and how important price and dates are.

In my opinion, moving has changed over the years in that movers are more expensive and the stuff people keep in their house has become relatively less expensive. Also, many people have become less sentimental. I have never had anything in my house that was worth paying someone to move thousands of miles. That is why I made the decision to sell eveything and replace it with new stuff. Also, the relief from not needing to deal with a move and keeping all that stuff was very refreshing, and less stressful. Obviously, you don't want to spend $5,000 to move $3,000 worth of stuff, much of with you don't want anyway.
