We have lived in The Villages for a year. My adult son wants to golf and would be considered a little bit above a beginner. ( in high school he golfed regularly , his best friend’s parents owned a golf course but that was 20 years ago.) For Christmas I want to buy him a set of golf clubs, a good mid level set to get him started . I am asking the experts for their opinion on such a set . He is right handed . Thank you

I would not select golf clubs for him. It depends on his exact playing ability and his personal preferences. What ever you select or we recommend will probably end up being not right. I would give him a $1500 gift certificate to Golf Galaxy and let him go and hit some clubs.

wow, you guys have a different idea of "mid level" than I do. PXG is well over 3K so why get fitted with them? I haven't bought in a while but my window shopping at sports stores says I can buy a pretty nice set for $1500.
For a player just restarting after 20 years I would set my price point lower. Just my opinion.

I threw out the figure $1500, and that was probably a mistake to anchor on a number. But no matter how you look at it golf clubs are expensive and personal. I would not select my son or daughters golf clubs for them. They would never tell you, but it could be an expensive mistake.

Go to Callaway Preowned on-line. You can get excellent quality 3-5 years old clubs for a small fraction of the price of new ones. That’s all that is needed for a beginner to intermediate level player. I have two identical bags of clubs, one for each of our homes, all purchased from there.

what is your budget for this gift? every gift giver has a budget
1,000, 5,000,10,000? first question to answer do you know anything about golf???? second question if not be careful whose advice you take, not neighbor Bob who shoots 100 for 18 holes did he play golf or at golf??? third question Find out what score he shot for 18 holes when he played. If it's 95 and over what you get wont matter he has no golf swing he is playing at golf and not playing golf. This is not a negative, he may just enjoy being out there and does not care about the score just having a good time, nothing wrong with that. And it will cost you less. As long as they are a bag full and shiny will do the trick. If he shoots bogey golf or better than he is playing golf and concerned with improvement. This will cost you more. If you really want to do it right and he is here for 4 or 5 days at Christmas, find a pro to teach him for 2 days. A solid 2 days, 6 hours per day. Pay the pro 500$. He is young even to handle and this one on one will produce dividends. Preferably the lessons are outside and not inside. Better feel for the real. Then have him get fitted, PGA Superstore can do this and he wont be limited to 1 club maker and he will have a semblance of a golf swing. Don't scrimp on the lessons. Once fitted he can choose the right clubhead for him. The fitter will do the rest. Then he will be enjoying your gift for the rest of his life and will be ever grateful. PRICELESS and in 1 year he wont be looking for his next set of clubs. Maybe at least 5- 7 yers before the marketing of golf clubs can grab him. One pro's opinion given your situation..........answering question 1 will determine the Road to follow.........and as a side benefit you won't worry about keeping him busy while he is here. PRICELESS Quote:

go to Sarasota Golf Shop and get him a gift certificate for $1000. Let him get measured and pick his own clubs. If he needs to add money to that $1000 to get what he wants, he can do that. Do not buy him clubs. Lessons are also available there, a driving range is available too.

The best is always the custom club shops who see $$$$ in brand new never played golf customer and convince them they need to spend $4000 on a set of clubs and $800 putter. Without those clubs they could never play golf to their potential. Sadly their potential would be the same with clubs from Costco. Hope nobody knocks on those residents door to sell them a bridge
