Default Explanation of the 5th and 6th cent local option fuel tax ballot measure

I was just looking at the ballot for the upcoming election. There are two county issues on the ballot. One is the tourist tax and the other is the 5th and 6th cent local option fuel tax.

County governments can levy up to 12 cents per gallon on fuel. However, it is broken into separate categories. In 1983, the state legislature allowed counties to add a four cent fuel levy. However, Sumter County didn't enact the four cent fuel tax until 1988. In 1993 the state legislature raised the maximum cap of that first local option gas tax bracket from 4 cents to 6 cents. These additional two cents have been known as the 5th and 6th cent taxes.

In 1997, Sumter adopted the 5th and 6th cent tax. In 2008, it was extended until 2020 but in 2020, the County Commissioners extended it until December 31, 2027. However, according to Florida Statute 336.025, any single ordinance or referendum passing a local option fuel tax can only be levied for a period not to exceed 30 years so it can no longer be extended by the County Commissioners. Since the tax was first adopted in 1997, the 30 years expire next month which is why it is on the ballot. Please note that if it is approved, it will be extended from January 1, 2028, through December 31, 2058.

Wow, not a lot of versatility is permitted for a period of 30 years. It’s like nothing ever changes around here. It would be even more impressive if some kind of annual all electric vehicle tax were included I suppose.

Most states (about 41) have an additional automobile registration charge for EVs to account for the gas taxes they aren't paying. Florida is not one of those states but I have no doubt that such a charge will appear at some point in the future, as well as the other remaining states that don't currently have such a charge.

Most states add 1 to 200 dollar tax on EVs. Not enough IMO beings EVs are so smart the tax imo needs to done by miles sent to local governments and bill mailed out each month just like ice cars had have to buy gas a 15 to 20 cents or more per gallon extra tax for states would’ve be fair IMO. Hybrids 10 cent per mile. Fair is fair, should get no benefits on highway taxes just because it EV. The highways and bridges don’t know different.

Things have changed more cars, more traffic, more gas consumption, more toll roads, more taxes collected, no need for increase. IMO should be decrease in state gas tax.

Too Funny! Are you from the clandestine “For a better Florida”? They totally missed the mark on social media.

In reality, the median annual EV registration fee is about $150 with a range of $50 to $400. In Florida, the total gas tax is 40 cents per gallon. For a gas car, if you assume 12000 miles per year of driving at 25 miles per gallon, that would translate to about $192 in gas tax paid. Therefore, an EV fee of about $200 per year would be about right on average. You really only need to get the average about right instead of creating additional bureaucracy to try to attempt to monitor how much individual people drive. However, keep in mind that electricity is already being taxed; for home charging there just isn't a way to send that money to fund roads. For Level 3 charging, which is only being used for EVs, there is and this opens up the possibility of double taxation.

Since we use our gas sipping golf carts for about 99% of our daily transportation needs in Florida, a couple more cents per gallon is practically nothing. For all of last winter and the first month of spring I spent less on gas than I did the first week we got back up north, where the state gas tax is more painful.

Any increase gas taxes is outrageous beings states and federal government make more on gallon gas than companies producing it.
