Default 20% less Income

If the doom and gloom is correct and Social Security is in trouble will be cut
by 2032, could you afford to stay in the Villages with a 20% cut in benefits?

A cut in SS would be political suicide for all that voted for it , never going to happen.

Not going to happen. If you are already receiving benefits your SS income, as well as your COLA increases, is as secure as the gold in Fort Knox...all 5,480 tons of it.

That's not to say that there won't be changes that may negatively affect those who are not yet drawing Social Security.

Agreed. There will be no cuts. Political suicide as said earlier.

Most of the responses do not answer the question. I think we could survive with a 20% cut. Our house is paid for, we live a simple life, (free golf, watch tv and read, and go on inexpensive vacations). And if things really got tight, my wife could always go back to work.

They would vote to cut their own pay 20%, before they'd vote for a cut in Social Security ... & lose their sinecure.

Depending on the regime in power in D.C. at the time, I would not be surprised at all if they instituted income-based adjustments / qualifications in the name of equity and fairness.

The median income in the Villages is around $80K, far greater than typical social security benefits. Plus the majority have substantial assets. Most could tolerate a SS cut if they had to. There are of course, some who are fully dependent on SSI, but no need broadcast individual circumstances in a social media post.

House in TV by far more affordable than condo in Madeira Beach. Or lake house in Northern MI.

20% isn’t going to happen to some because who knows what 6 years will bring. Not that I believe it will happen to already active accounts. Thread does give some a scare.

That would equate to distribution of wealth, that won't fly here.

Wouldn’t surprise me, but in reality there is no fairness in cutting the benefits of those who paid the most into the system during their working years.
