We where told by the people that trim our palms that one of our queen palms was rotting from the inside out. Has anyone every heard this before and how can you tell if it is rotting? Does anyone know of an arborist that would look at the palm?

Knock on the trunk of the tree at various levels. Yes they do rot from inside and you won't notice it until the tree gives way and bends in half. My neighbor had three palms that gave way after about four years.

We had ours cut down.....Now we have NO constant maintenance or BUGS!...Good luck!

Cut it down Now before it causes any damage. Queen Palms are a junk palm look nice yes but JUNK get rid of it.

How right you are and the landscapers keep putting them in! They charge through the nose for them and they cost next to nothing. Residents who move down here are starry-eyed about having a palm because they are tropical looking. The landscapers sell them a bill-of-goods. Most of them are NOT nice looking. Practically all of them have frizzle-top because they have not been properly cared for to begin with.

It's commonly called Butt Rot and it is not treatable. The only alternative is to cut the tree down and, because it is a fungus, you cannot plant another palm in the same spot. We just had one removed a few weeks ago,

Overall, they are very high maintenance so I doubt it will be missed.

We made the mistake of replacing a dead palm with a new one and now that one has crown rot. You can reach in the center and pull out handfuls of new dead palm "sprouts" and the bottoms are wet and smell awful. Landscaper told me to not plant another in that spot.

The Queen is not strong enough to survive the cold temperatures, not indigenous to this part of Florida and mine got hit by the frost a few times, thought it died, but always come back. One night a strong wind snapped it off 3' off the ground, and it was rotted on the inside.

Yes, that happened to one of our Queen Palms. You should have it taken down. What happened with ours is, we didn't know that it was rotted in the middle and one day while I was taking groceries out of the trunk of my car, a big gust of wind came and down came the palm tree, brushing my arm and hitting the back of the car. Had I been a foot closer to it, it would have come down on me.

I'm not a gardener (black thumb), but what I do know after living in Florida for many years is that you should always checking the zone for anything you plant. Queen palms are rated for Zone 9B, and we are in Zone 9A. It's marginal, but this indicates you should not have this type of palm tree in T he Villages.

Bugs, rats and snakes. Very high maintenance and so many palms are planted too close to the driveway and homes, the roots on one are pulling up my neighbors driveway. The landscaper strategically placed the palms around the garage ............... too close to the driveway.
