I am getting ready to hang various objects on our lanai. I found some old thread that said to use a hammer drill and masonary bit with a tapcon screw. I suppose that for heavy objects you would use an anchor.

Is this still the preferred method? Is there any chance of cracks in the stucco?

I think I would put masking tape over and around the potential hole. I use that to prevent splintering. Have not tried it on so heavy as stucco, just brick and wood.

Hammer drill isn't necessary, just alot faster. Tapcon concrete anchors (screws) is what you want and they will hold anything you and your buddy can lift. Buy the Tapcon drill bit and hang away. I use them every day and the stucko never chips. I use 1/4 x 1.75" for hanging directly on the stucko or 3.25" length to go through drywall into a block exterior wall.

if cement drilled properly and correct sized cement screw, cracking is no more likely than any other wall material.

In concrete one does need to be conscious that it is not a homogenious material and with too much weight will give way.

Tapcon seem to include the bit with the package of screws. No plastic insert with these. And the best thing is they are pretty forgiving as you can unscrew them later - much better than masonry nail.

They include the bit in the 75 count packaging, not in the smaller counts
