The Sopranos, Season Six. Part 1
I borrowed a set of 4 DVDs from the library to see what this TV series was like, because I don't have TV at home. I was curious to see James Gandolfini in action, because I read in the news how he died from a heart attack from overeating.
About 20 minutes was all I could stand to watch. In disc number one I could see how big he was and constantly stuffing his face with food. In about 20 minutes there must have been at least 3 different times where he was stuffing himself with food. I guess he wasn't acting because that's the way he died in real life. But that's not the only reason I stopped watching. I couldn't stand to watch people acting so stupidly. If anyone reading this liked it, tell me what you liked about it. Was the stupid, violent, lifestyle supposed to be cool? |

If it's murder that you object to, what do you think of Macbeth, Othello, Hamlet, or King Lear? If it's gangs you object to, what's your opinion of West Side Story or Romeo and Juliet (I know...feuding families are different from gangs). I think that one can enjoy great writing and great acting without endorsing the lifestyle that's being depicted, and the number of Emmys and other awards that the show won speaks for itself.

If anyone knows of a true fan of the Sopranos, I have a leather jacket never worn I would pass on to them. No yard sale types or the like. Just a true lover of the series.

Golfingnut - I will whole heartedly agree with you on this one. Really enjoyed the Soprano series - don't know if it is because I am Italian as well. Thought the acting and story lines were always interesting. I will tell you one time my mom was visiting and we had the Sopranos on and she ran in her bedroom and called her sister saying "my God you won't believe the porn they are watching on tv"!

I loved the series and recently watched all six seasons end-to-end on Xfinity On Demand (over about a four month period). But I understand why you didn't enjoy it. There are parts of The Sopranos that defy logic, such as how can they be so cavalier about murder and never seem to worry at all about leaving around evidence (for example, who would wack someone and merely drop the gun on the floor?). Also, I got very tired of the psychoanalysis scenes between Tony and his shrink, which I tended to fast forward through. The dynamics of Tony and his "friends" and "enemies" is what kept me interested. And who couldn't love all of the scenes with Pauly Walnuts?

That series is rated TV-MA and is known to be about violent gangsters.
There are a few things I do not understand myself. Why make those types of negative comments about the lead actor? The post also sounds dangerously close to a denigration of the sensibilities or intelligence of those that might have liked the series. Also, IMO; "Why others liked the show", is the wrong question. A better question is: If you have such a strong revulsion toward that type of show, why did you watch it in the first place? |

It was a fantastic series. Fine actors practicing their craft, a riveting storyline, and a satisfying conclusion after 6 seasons (or was it 7). James Gandolfini died about 5+ years after the series ended; while his large girth may have conributed to his demise, he died of a heart attack, which can happen to anyone, regardless of their size or eating habits. And he was not morbidly obese.

One of my all time favorite series! Maybe because I am also Italian. I loved the parallels drawn between Tony's two families. Yes, bad language, sex, drugs, murder, depravity, and humanity...the Soprano's had it all. Today, Tony was the bad guy; tomorrow, the good guy. I really miss it!

The episode with Chris and Pauly in the snowy woods searching for a Russian they tried to kill is, perhaps, some of the most hilarious TV I have ever seen.
