Based on the latest news reports, it appears most likely that this plane was commandeered and rerouted to land at an unknown location. What’s not yet clear is who did it and why.

My guess as one potential explanation … a covert intelligence operation by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps -- ie think of them as the militarized vanguard of the ruling Mullah elites in Iran. They would repaint and remark the plane, and keep it hidden for a while until things cool down a bit. Then, load the plane up with explosives and used it as a mass terror weapon, similar to 9/11, and fly it into some target. Then claim Al-Qaida did it to give Iran a cover story by which to avoid US retaliation.

Targets could be anything … US ships in Persian gulf, oil refineries or, maybe even the new Freedom Tower in NYC.
