My husband and I had a message on our answering machine today, from a very authoritative sounding male voice, stating that he was calling from "the claims department of your county with a check fraud complaint." The message was probably only a minute or so long and at the end of the message, the voice said we (I?) or our attorney should call back at 1-877-881-0890. Interestingly, I picked up the phone at the very end of the message. It was strictly a recording; there was no warm body to speak with at the other end.
My antenna went up immediately! I called the Sumter non-emergency police department (1-352-569-1600) and they told me to call Seniors vs. Crime here in TV tomorrow, during working hours (689-4600), and give them the information. The gal at the P. D. told me that Seniors vs. Crime keeps records of this kind of thing, but truthfully, I really don't know what they do with these complaints. I am assuming that this is a scam although there is a possibility the message was really for the previous owner of our phone number. My initial thought, however, is to act with an air (a big air!) of caution, since I know that we have no problem whatsoever with check fraud.

A couple of things:
It was a robocall and you should just forget the whole thing. No agency would be making calls from a 877 number. If you have caller ID, just ignore all of those numbers. Second, we live in SUMTER County. No "P". Very easy to make the mistake at first. Seniors vs Crime would tell you the same thing about the number. |

I went online with century link & read how to block this type of calls.
*60 on your phone & follow the instructions.

I just tried *60 and it is not Century Link.
The message stated that it was not available on our line and that we should contact our United business office. I have no clue who that is.

Never call suspicious numbers back. To do so completes the circle and verifies your number is active and you will communicate with the scammer.

I was able to block calls with Century Link. Make sure you have a dial tone, then dial *60 and follow the recorded instructions. You can block up to 15 callers. I don't know how it works on other providers but I"m sure you could find out on their website.

Just asking ... why are all of your messages posted in bold type? I thought that was used to highlight something OR to signify yelling.

If anyone is interested in how to stop these calls on an iPhone, PM me and I'll give you instructions how to block these calls. You'll get them once, but never again.
