Default Moving Companies

I'm in the process of getting quotes. Had one today from United which I thought was extremely high considering were not taking much furniture. One bedroom set, 2 flat screen TVs, and 50-60 boxes and they quoted us $4,200 to move from Michigan. I'll get a few more quotes and then start checking on cubes and pods.

Who did you use for your move and what was your experience with the company?

BEWARE: of moving companies. A few years ago there was a big scandal about moving companies quoting a price and then when they get to the destination the price suddenly jumps to 3 times or more what they originally quoted and they won't give you your stuff until you pay and there is nothing you can do. The scandal died down and I hadn't heard anymore about it so I thought maybe the problems had subsided. However, my nephew just moved from Texas to Florida a couple of months ago and the same thing happened to him. They quoted something like $3000, when they got to FL they say, "sorry" you now owe us $10,000, they finally settled on $6,000 and he got his stuff. They are a young family and brought almost nothing back with them, their parents were giving them some furniture when they got to FL. I have heard of them keeping your stuff for months and months if you don't pay. There are no controls over them. And, yes he had a contract, but they said other things came up. A few years ago it was happening all the time. I think one of the news programs even did a story on them. After what happened to my nephew 3 months ago I'm afraid this problem has not gone away.

We moved in November of 2012 and used Allied Van Lines. It was the second time we had used them and we were very pleased. We moved our entire household (3 bedrooms, LR, DR, Kitchen and garage) from Houston and it cost ~ $4,500. They were the lowest of 3 bids we received.

After reading your post I did searches on moving companies and there are thousands of complaints against all of them. You are correct the scam is still going on as many of these bad reviews were recent. The number one complaint is the guaranteed price is exceedingly more due to weight. Also, a lot of complaints of damaged items not being compensated for.

I am not going to risk being overly charged for the small amount of things we will be moving. I have contacted ABF Cubes and will be using them. Its a lot cheaper too.

Let the packing begin!
