Earlier today I read a post from someone who lost their 17 year old Bichon a few months ago and is now ready to adopt another dog.
Last year I was in a similar situation when Magic, my 16 year old kitty, went to the Rainbow Bridge. It was sad to come home with no kitty to greet me. A few months after losing Magic, I adopted Molly, the kitty on my avatar. Molly was 10 at the time; now she is 11. My dad asked me why I wanted to adopt a 10 year old cat as most certainly I will not have Molly with me for 15 years like I did Magic. Molly's former owners were going to have her put to sleep because they were moving to an apartment that did not allow them to take more than 2 pets, and they already had 2 dogs. Fortunately the owners' son contacted a rescue group who rescued Molly and put her up for adoption, which I how I found her. Now that Molly has been part of my life for the past 13 months, I have become so fond of her. Molly has filled the hole in my life that was created when I lost Magic. If you are thinking of adding a new fur kid to your family please consider adopting a dog or cat from a shelter or a rescue group. Senior pets can especially make a great addition to your family. I think Molly rescued me as much as I rescued her. Do the pets we adopt from shelters or rescue groups rescue us as much as we rescue them?

I think I would have gone crazy (even if some people still say I am) long before if not for Sport and Beau both rescues from the Villages area rescue groups. Sport was from the Sumter County Humane Society while Beau is from Max's Pet Connection.
All our other three dogs we all got as puppies. Jennifer V., used to dump the last one--a cocker spaniel named Amber-- on my head when she and I were visiting my parents in the CA Wine Country during her 1990 Spring Break from the University of Minnesota Law School. And we had a cat who just had to have her 7 to 9 kittens in a OCD clean freak grandmother of mine, Helen. We got the cat as a kitten too. Helen sure looked at the cat differently from then on and she probably wanted to visit Reno less and less especially during the time that Smokey could breed. |

Thank you for your positive testimonials about adopting shelter pets and the value of an older pet too. Such incorrect stigmas come with both age & shelters that it needs to be reinforced how wonderful they are. They aren't there because of their flaws, but because of their human's lack of training, socializing, or searching for a pet-friendly home. We hear unbelievable excuses of why they would surrender something that was supposed to be a treasure. So when we hear the gratitude of kind people like you both, it makes all our hard work worth it! Claudia Humane Society/SPCA of Sumter County.
