The post about bookmobiles in the thread on Sumter Co Library reminded me about bookmobiles.
One of my earliest memories is of visiting the bookmobile in Davenport, IA at 3 or 4 years old. It started my love affair with books and, I suspect, also started me in the direction of higher education. Anyone else remember bookmobiles? I know it is a mostly rural thing, but it is/was a wonderful way to get books to people and to turn children into readers. |

I remember the bookmobile in the rural Virginia county where I was raised. I always loved the concept. I just posted a link to our bookmobile here in TV on another thread. I have always loved the public library system and am a strong supporter of the libraries. We had a books-by-mail program too. It was discontinued because of funding shortfalls. I understood, but I know a lot of elderly people loved the convenience of that program and missed it when it was gone.
