Default Residency change from PA to FL

We are gradually spending more and more time in TV and in 2014, if all goes as planned, we will have spent 7 months here.

Several friends have had the same experience and officially changed their residency from PA to FL. We're now in the process of researching the pros/cons of making the change. We do plan to keep our home in PA, primarily for the summer months.

Would like to hear any comments, positive or negative, from folks who have done this.

We do know that FL has no state income tax and no inheritance tax. We have heard that car insurance is much more expensive in FL than in PA.

Any advice or experiences to share?

Same question for us, but coming from Ohio. Has anyone done this and willing to share?

It is more than a bit difficult to give an answer without lot more details. However, some observations:

1) You will gain FL homestead exemption on property tax, lose it on PA. If you have it on PA property, you can see what you will lose. County assessor down here can help you figure out what you would gain.

2) Your car insurance company can tell you (based on zip) what the rates will be. If you already own property here, no change in those rates.

3) Overall, we found that our expenses went down (MD versus FL and rural WV verses FL). However, you mileage may vary.

The property taxes on our condo in MI with homestead will still be higher than a more expensive house we're considering in The Villages without homestead. Car insurance will be lower.

Default Residency changes from Pa to Fl

Everything is cheaper here for us. We were paying over $12,000.00 taxes in ny a year and it is still going up from what we are told.
