You will need to get a Florida Drivers License and register to vote. Then you can claim the Homestead Exemption to lower your property taxes.

The requirements for getting a Florida driver's license became more complicated a few years ago. Go to Gather Go Get the FLORiDA Card: Index for the correct information.

When you get your Florida driver's license you then need to get your vehicles registered for Florida ... so you will need the titles and the liens (if still paying) on your vehicles. This can be done by mail .. but you need to have correct forms.

To be a Florida resident for 2013 income tax purposes, the law states that you must reside in Florida for at least 183 days in 2013.

Did not realize this. I thought (one of several ways to become a resident) you could just sign a statement at the court house and become a resident. The problem is getting you prior state to agree that you are a FL resident.
Of course you would vote in FL, resister you cars etc. as suggested in the above posts.
Can you site the FL law for the 183 days?
I became a FL resident the day I closed on my FL home. It was my second day in FL for the current year Remember FL does not have an income tax on individuals.

It is not unusual that you do not know the requirements. Forget the papers for a minute. You first need to know how many days you will spend in Florida (don't count the days you will be back at your real residence).....Good Luck!!

If your name is different from the one on your birth certificate which you need to get your FL drivers license you have to document the
name change(s). Your SS card showing your current name will not do.
If you have been divorced you need a certified copy of the marriage showing the name change(s)...or the originals. Copies won't work and divorce papers won't be accepted. This can be a hassle if you're in Florida trying to get these things mailed to you from your old home town court house....in my case I had three last names.
Forget trying to put your past behind you.....lol
