Default Is this education or even fun?

Why on earth is the VHS enabling/teaching students to ridicule others? What does that have to do with 'school spirit' or 'homecoming'? I wonder what they and their teachers/parents think of snowbirds! And I wonder what their other 'numerous activities' consist of!

From the Daily Sun:
Invasion of the tacky tourist

Students in visors, sunscreen, floppy hats and sunglasses crowded the halls Tuesday at The Villages High School.

They were expressing their school spirit on “tacky tourist” dress-up day, one of numerous activities taking place during homecoming week at the high school.

Just good clean fun! Tourists CAN be tacky. That is why they are so easy to spot. This is not denigrating. It is what it is.

Your kidding right? I have a son that is a senior at that school and it is just good clean fun. He looked ridiculous and we all had a good laugh. We did things like that for homecoming week as well when I was in high school back in the early 80's. Nothing wrong with it!

I happen to agree with the OP. In fact I fail to understand the sense of humor that seems to have evolved as presented by television sitcoms and movies today. Perhaps it is just me but it is absolutely lost on me because it is too mean spirited, in your face, disrespectful and thoughtless humor ...that and too filthy...and I don't much care for bathroom humor.

i just had to let it all out....feel better now

I wonder why one would personalize that to be "teaching" ridicule of snowbirds or vacationers, when clearly it is a "dress down" and "costume" day. The students normally wear uniforms to school (a wise policy).

My kids had Pajama Days now and then. Did that mean they were ridiculing sick people in hospital pajamas?? No. They were allowed to lighten up a bit and laugh.

Television has been "teaching" ridicule and mockery for decades. Saturday Night Live has been doing a great job of it for about 38 years now.

I think it's cool and all clean fun !!
We went to the Sarasota Parrot Head Club's Birthday Bash one year and they had a tacky tourist costume contest. It was so much fun !! In fact one of our Villager Parrot Heads won the contest !
I just think sometimes people just have to lighten up and enjoy life. This is certainly not hurting anyone.

I do NOT condone bullying but we ALL had to take a little teasing growing up and learn to poke a little kind hearted fun too. Not so awful Maria.

We LOVE snowbirds here. They aren't tacky tourists.

I have a brother that loves to ham it up likes the costume thing etc so i am certain he would side with the school kids here. In my case while I see no reason to say yea or nay costumes are something I have avoided my entire life and have never understood the attraction

First of all, our snowbirds aren't tourists. So I don't think the kids were ridiculing them. Tourists, especially those visiting a foreign country, often do look ridiculous, at least to the natives. This activity means no more than Halloween costumes do. If you dress up as a skeleton are you making fun of the dead?
Just lighten up a bit, OK?

I know when I go on vacation I most likely stand out as a "tourist" as well. I know when I've been to New York the beggars pick me out every time. Evidently I'm the only one wearing cowboy boots on the streets of Manhattan....lol

Hopefully as we age we do not lose our sense of humor. Unlike an aging body it seems to me we should have an easy time retaining it.
