Roof day
I am pretty handy but I am by no means a construction person. Roofs have to be done right or it can be disastrous - water is the enemy of a house. Which is probably why I was pretty anxious the day my hail damaged roof was to be replaced. I came home yesterday to find a dumpster and pile of roofing materials at the top of my driveway. They had apparently been 'Unable to contact me' but I called them and "yes tomorrow they will be there". So I decided to work from home - which is a good thing. I sat outside while some of my code was running. The crew arrived in a 'very tired' large van stocked with everything but the kitchen sink. I noticed as someone delivered 4 sheets of osb (today's cheap plywood). I didn't expect any wood to need to be replaced as the old roof was a mere 8 years old. Before I knew it they had a circular saw out and cut one of my sheets ... I asked why and they indicated the while wood wasn't rotten was a little buckled. Their English is enough to get buy My Spanish is high school and unpracticed. So who cleared this? No answer. Fearing a sham I called my contact and verbally blasted him. He came over to my house and we continued to have words. You aren't very friendly he said. I said I am ****ed I have to watch your guys.. He left in a huff. I came outside not ten minutes later and I noticed they were putting the rubber ice shield on top of the rhino paper (today's tar paper). That would essentially make the ice shield useless. Another call and "we are sending our QC guy". Rahul arrives looks up and says yeah "its wrong" They tore the old stuff off and redid it. Raul didn't finish high school but he knows roofing. I make them redo the step flashing that they were inclined to leave (just not good work) Raul tells me he was told stay and make sure its right; I have established myself as a knowledgable angry vocal client and they fear the bad review. I am just the guy to penn it; I watch as their air compressor hose flys off the compressor several times. It wont stay on.. Then their ladder device to get shingle bundles to the roof refuses to start..Raul sells his nail gun to one of the crew as his is failing... I don't want to work from home tomorrow but how can I trust them. How I hate being the heavy - when I lose my temper I don't like myself. Why is it you are truly lucky to find craftsmanship today.. Yeah can you believe the roof was over $22k. Nearly 8pm dark and they just left; I feel drained. |

We don't get hail in Florida. Are you talking about your home in Pa or Fla? Either way, a bad experience. I think if someone pulls up in a crappy truck then they need to be told to take a hike.

Yes, we do! My entire neighborhood had to have their roofs replaced after a severe hailstorm. The damage was visible even to the untrained eye.

Here in Chicago we had hail in April. A lot of people in our neighborhood were getting new roofs and we had a lot of storm chasers and gypsy companies coming to the door and calling us. So I contacted State Farm and they sent out an adjuster and also gave me the name of a reputable roofer. We did not have hail damage but if we had it would have been covered and we would have just paid our deductible. We have a 2-story 2700 sq ft house and they said the roof would be between $15 and $18k. So it seems it this is for a house in TV the price was high? IMHO.

That seems way over the top for reroofing cost. Anyone else care to share the cost of reroofing?

I don't believe this is in The Vilages - why would you need an ice shield??? Must be his PA home.

Boy, I think you got taken for a big ride!! Here in R.I. I just got roofing estimates on my two story 2200 sq ft colonial that has an 8/12 pitched roof, a 12x14 breezeway, and a 24x24 garage and with high grade shingles my estimates ranged from $9,000-$12,000.

Did the OP say if this was his Villages home or a Northern home?
Yes, it does hail very infrequently in The Villages area but I doubt if there would be enough to cause roof damage. I remember seeing the after effects of a major hailstorm in Nebraska. Cars were all dented all over and their windows broken. Two insurance companies set up claims shops in a motel and that is excellent customer service. |

WOW! I guess I got a steal. I had a hail damaged roof in PA, 3000 sg ft of roofing, total job was very close to $10,000, completed in 1 day, and included several upgrades that I requested or agreed to. Included "lifetime" shingles, 15 year warranty on the installation. This was done about 4 years ago. PS insurance did cover about $3500 of the cost, so my actual cost was $6500. I hope if and when I need to do this in FL I can find a similar installer.
