Default Extreme Makeover on May 4th

May 4th
7:00 PM
on abc6 will be the preview show
and at 8:00 PM will be the
National airing of the
Silva House in Warwick RI

I am proud to say that the company that I work for was a part of this transformation.

And It is with great pride and heartfelt thanks to the many
Herrick & White volunteers
that I would like to invite you to watch this Sunday’s episode of Extreme Makeover Home Edition.
Although you will not know who we are on TV, you can be assured that Herrick & White
had a hand in just about every room of the Silva House.
From helping to design, manufacture, finish and install custom components to installation of doors and trim.
Working in the art tent with Ed Sanders, John Littlefield and Didi Snyder was absolutely fantastic.
Countless hours were spent in the shop and at the house and the outpouring of support was overwhelming.

It was so amazing at what could be accomplished when a group of people work together; there was not one person, who said that the house would not be done on time.
To say that this experience touched every one’s heart would be an understatement, but what I learned is that there are incredible people in our world and when given the opportunity they come through.
I am extremely proud to have been a part of this incredible experience.
I will see for the first time on TV, the look of the faces of the Silva Family when the bus moves
and they were able to see their new house.
Needless to say there was probably not a dry eye to be found.

PS…Please check out Ty’s Secret Room……
that was one of our special projects.…

Bright,

It was a great experience. Unfortunately, I never made it to the house site.
Most of my involvement was working on the project "in house". Any where from recruiting
volunteers, securing donated materials, and helping manufacture the products needed for the house. BUt it was fun and worth it.

Thanks for asking!

Thanks for the heads up Joanne! And blessings for all the hard work. I know that "in house" work can be just as stressful and hard as at the actual locations! I will certainly watch the show. Congrats.

Hey fellow RI'er! WTG! Sounds like you work for a Co. in RI to be very very proud of!! Thanks for telling us that the show is Monday, and the Silva's makeover is soon to be seen! I LOVE extreme makeover and the wonderful projects they undertake. Funny. my Aunt lived on that street when she was a newlywed about 48 years ago! I hear the Silvas are devoted to many children with disabilities and sure could use a bigger place. Could it be the same house?? Joann, cudos to you and Herrick and White!!! You can tell them we will be watching and inspired all the way down in Florida!! PS when ya getting here, we should meet for lunch or a RI club meeting!

How wonderful to be part of such a great project. I'm one of those who absolutely cannot watch EM -- I'm a pool of tears before the show is over (mind you, not in a pool but am the pool). I start blubbering about 5 minutes into the show, stop when they're doing some of the work, start up again when the rooms start taking shape and then quit about an hour after the show is over. Not a pretty sight.

You must be thrilled to have been able to be part of this project. When you have the time, could you give us some details like how the family is selected, etc.?

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could do something like this here on a mini basis ... get a crew of carpenters, etc. to help some of those who live here but have somehow become so impoverished or ill to be able to maintain their homes. Maybe you could help with this idea?

Red, you read my mind! "Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could do something like this here on a mini basis ... get a crew of carpenters, etc. to help some of those who live here but have somehow become so impoverished or ill to be able to maintain their homes. Maybe you could help with this idea" Maybe Joann could even give EXTREME MAKEOVER a heads up that TOTV peeps would love to volunteer for a future program!!! :dontknow: Count me in if anyone knows of someone in desperate need!!! My small donations to the Red Cross aren't as personal!

Thanks for all of your feedback. This has been truly a great experience.

To answer all of your questions regarding this project -
Each family has to send in a "portfolio" of why they would like to have their home transformed. The committee then picks out so many homes to look at and they visit each home. The family is asked to leave the home for the day and the EM group and the local inspectors (in the family's town) visit their home. The Extreme Makeover group then decides which home will get the "makeover" and the process begins. A local builder is contacted who in turns sources for all phases of help - plumbers, electricians, carpenters, floors, landscapers, etc. All of the work is done on a volunteer basis. All materials are donated. All the furnishings are donated. The actual home is built in a warehouse and then brought to the site. You will see this in the show. I was amazed that the basement is actually pre fab beforehand. Please watch the show !!!!

As for doing this in TV.....this would be a great idea. There are many people who are in TV that have all the diversified backgrounds that would be needed. I will be meeting with the Woodworkers Club when I am down there. And see if there is an interest.

Let's keep that idea open and see if we can make it work....

Just a thought!!!!!!!
My reason for meeting with the Woodworkers Club is that here at Herrick & White, we have a group of "elves" that belong to the North Pole Toy Company =NPTC.
This group of Elves - again are volunteers- manufacture toys for area organizations. The Woodworkers Group in TV does the same thing. So we are exchanging ideas for toys and anything else that works for these organizations. So here is another way to help the needy. I will keep you informed of my visit and the outcome.

If you are interested in volunteering for these types of programs, here is a reference to find what is going on in your area:

http://www.habitat.org/cd/local/

I have volunteered in Tallytown and it is very worthwhile and very much appreciated.
