Is it non-repairable? The one in our former home in Illinois was 14y/o when we left and only had to replace two capacitor's.

I'd get a 2nd opinion before I'd invest in that cost. Did you call the warranty department? If you do have to replace, Chuck Farrell is quite reputable.

I am curious what problem you were experiencing and what was told to you by I assume an a/c repair/service person.

You are talking of replacing at a little over the halfway point in service expectation!!

Can you enlighten us?

My unit has a ten year warranty. Check yours before taking any action.

Definitely call Chuck Farrell. There's a good chance that at least some if your parts will still be under warranty, so even if you have to replace the whole thing you'd save a little money. Chuck is very good about checking to see if a part is still under warranty. Very good, very honest.
