Default Rental Deposit ?

Are rental deposits usually non-refundable? Wouldn't that be like pre-rent rent? :dontknow:

Most deposits are refundable. Sometimes, portions are non-refundable -- such as cleaning deposits, pet deposits .... I've never heard of a full deposit being non-refundable. I have heard of instances where you get none of your deposit back because of damage to the property (some legitimate, some nitpicking -- depends on how ethical the owner or property manager truly is).

That is the way I thought it was "supposed" to work but I saw an ad on TOTV, I think it was yesterday, that stated "non-refundable" deposit. I mean the "big" one that is required when you reserve the rental. At least it's good to know up front what's expected. I'm wondering if anyone has had a bad experience they considered unfair with deposits that were not refunded?

Meja....perhaps that meant that once you put down a depost you were committed to the rental...i.e. you couldn't cancel your reservation. Once the rental is paid for and occupancy completed the deposit (less any deductions for damages) would be returned to you. Just the owner protecting himself from being stuck with an empty house at the last minute.

Thank you for responding Red and Villages. That makes sense. I figured they'd penalize for not following through but would be sure to check the intentions when making reservations. If anyone has had experience with desposits not being returned after the visit, I hope to see it posted.
