This quote from Redwitch on another topic is giving me the courage to ask my question:

The Villages website has the lists of new and pre-owned homes. Many of these home descriptions say that the air handler has been moved to the garage. People on this forum talk about their air conditioners & humidistats. Some of the photographs of the houses show fireplaces. Many of the pre-owned homes have afghans on the sofas and chairs. NOwhere have I ever heard mention of a furnace.

Do the houses in TV come with furnaces? Does it not get cold enough for a furnace in the winter? Should I start knitting an afghan? :dontknow:
Thanks!

There is an excellent heating and cooling system in our new Hadley home. I am sure there are like systems in all homes in TV. Yes. There are a couple of weeks of cold enough weather to run the heat.

Yup, we have furnaces. Just not worth mentioning since they're so rarely used. Best thing you can do is replace the filters regularly and maybe pay a service to come check it annually just to make sure it is working properly. I will say that I didn't turn mine on even once since I've been here. Just didn't need it.

Heating and cooling are integrated into one system utilizing the same ductwork for both. Our heating fuel is natural gas; I believe the new homes are all electric. The thermostat has a switch to change from one mode to the other. We were in TV over Christmas and New Year's this past year and never had to turn our heat on, though I'm sure there are freezes where it would be necessary.

I'm guessing that I had my heat on for more than a few hours (that is, for a day or more at a time) maybe six times last winter. The rest of the time I just left it off!

The a/c, on the other hand, runs pretty much 24/7 from April thru October. Hate being hot and sweaty when indoors!

Thanks to everybody for your answers to my "not stupid" question! You TOTVers are the BEST! :#1:

I'm glad to know there will be a furnace ready in case I need it. I'm not a very fast knitter.
I asked the furnace question because many many houses out here in Utah don't have air conditioning. They use "swamp coolers" instead. "You don't need air conditioning in Utah" is what the realtor said when we moved here 24 years ago. I guess it all depends on how you define "need" :
It sounds as if you don't really need a furnace in Florida, but I'm glad to know they're there if you DO need them.
Thank You!

Swamp Coolers work OK in very low humidity areas.
I hope you're ready for Florida's high humidity. It may be a shock to your system after Utah.

Yes, I have to admit that I'm worried about the humidity. I tend to get a little cranky when I'm hot. (Mr. Judy would say cranky = homicidal)
On the other hand, maybe all that excess moisture will plump up my wrinkles?
Maybe it will be like a daily spa treatment?

TV homes also have indoor baths with running water.

Sorry, but you gave me the opportunity and I just could not resist :joke:.

You're question was not stupid. Up until a few years ago some homes on the ocean beach didn't have air-conditioning or furnaces. Some still don't have them, but that's the exception rather than the rule. They depend on the ocean breeze to stay cool when it's hot, and cuddle when it gets cool .

Know what you mean about the humidity. It is truly awful. I'm hoping I'll adjust to it sometime in the next 20 years but I won't bet on that. Even so, TV is worth the misery of the sweats.

I hate to say it but there are days in the winter months we turn on the heat in the morning to get the "chill" off and then end up turning on the A/C in the afternoon to get back to cool.

That is the kind of weather we have here in the winter.

RW:

You could try the dry heat of Arizona - but then you would have to stay indoors for six months to escape the 115 degree temps. A nice 94 degrees and low humidity in Pleasant Hill when I drove thru after work today - home sale prices dropped 39% in Contra Costa County from June 07 to June 08 (must be every other house in Brentwood, Antioch and Pittsburg were foreclosed and the mortgage holders are giving them away).

I don't know if last week was typical weather, but it was much more pleasant in the Villages than here in NJ. I think a big part of it is that it's polluted here and the air at TV seemed very clear.
