You could start by informing your neighbor that his dog barks incessantly when he is gone. Perhaps he is unaware.
If you don't want to talk to your neighbor for some reason, why not leave a note on his door letting him know about the problem?
I'd give him a chance to fix the situation before I'd report him to Villages Community Standards.

Have the neighbors just moved in? If so, this could explain the barking. I would talk to the neighbor before I lodged a formal complaint.

Is the dog inside or outside barking? We have a small dog and he barks very little while outside for his few minutes here and there throughout the day. He spends 99.9% of his time indoors. If we hear him start, we immediately bring him in. Nothing worse than a neighbors dog barking while you are trying to nap or entertain.

If the dog is inside barking, (I can't imagine any one leaving a dog outside when they leave the house), then not sure what can be done.

I agree with Barefoot. Your neighbor is gone... chances are they don't realize the dog is barking. Our dog did the same thing when we moved down here. Our neighbors told us and we're grateful they did. Our dog got better once he was used to his surroundings.

What did you do about your dog's barking once your neighbor told you? Maybe it would help if the OP had a suggestion for the neighbor.

Actually our dog got comfortable with his new environment and is barking less. But we were more mindful of "how" we left our house (our dog finally understood that when we left through the garage, he knew we would be gone for a while). We didn't go to our neighbors from the Lanai... because then he knew we were close and he would bark. (I know... crazy.. but we tried to create some consistency so he knew what to expect).

If the neighbor is leaving the windows open when he is gone, he could close them and turn on the a/c.
If it's a small dog and crated, perhaps the crate could be moved to the laundry room and the door closed.
As you know, dogs can be anxious in new surroundings.
Often they settle down once they get used to their new digs.

No, not crazy. I agree with what you did. Smart dog owners. We used to go out our condo a certain way up north because our dog could watch us walk all the way across the marina to the restaurant through the deck sliders and would bark till he couldn't see us. If we went out through the garage instead, and took a more roundabout route, he couldn't see us.

We also didn't give him a big, long, sloppy good-bye, which would have made him nervous with separation ansxiety. We just said See you later, guy, and walked out. We started with small separations and worked up to longer ones. This was after he was done being crated while we were gone. He was through the chewing stage. All that stopped any barking.

Unfortunately, Community Watch will not respond to calls regarding barking dogs. Their suggestion is to call the county Animal Control. When I had this problem last year it took a number of complaints from different neighbors on my street to get a response and a visit from the authorities who issued a citation. I hope it doesn't come to that in your case but sometimes drastic measures are the only thing that people will pay attention to.

I would agree the best and first step is to talk with the neighbor. The note on the door is a less neighborly way of discussing a problem. If the neighbor responds in a positive way, problem solved. Let's hope for that solution.

Most Villagers are really great people and will work to find a solution to their barking dog noise.
