Default What Do You Suppose Would Happen?

"Best of Enemies" is a documentary featuring the hyperverbal battled between two superlative brains that hated each other. This was a 1968 product of ABC featuring 10 television debates between Gore Vidal (Myra Breckinridge) and William F. Buckley during the Republican and Democratic conventions. I vividly recall these debates as many of you may too.

Buckley could hardly bring himself to pronounced the title of Vidal's polysexual book Myra Breckenridge while Vidal referred to Buckley's "Latinate style" with a further ad lib of Buckley being the "Marie Antoinette of the right wing".

The ad hominem attacks escalated to a point where Vidal was calling Buckley a "crypto-Nazi" and Buckley responding "Now listen you queer, stop calling me a crypto-Nazi or I'll sock you in the (gd) face and you will stay plastered". Review by Joe Morgenstern 7/31/15

Now What Do You Suppose Would Happen Today In This Politically Correct, Trigger Warning Micro Aggressions Society With An Open Debate Such As This?

That would be hilarious! Let's hope for some spirited back and forth like that on August 6. Pundits would have a field day for weeks afterward, wouldn't they?

Dear Guest: If Trump doesn't add some spice to this debate I will be one surprised individual. I was taken by the entitlement both Vidal and Buckley had on their right to free speech. Its been so long since people have been able to speak their mind. Its like coming out of a Orwellian nightmare. I can say that and no one going to try and take away my livelihood like they did with Paula Dean, and so many others. what happen to stick and stones..........

I understand hatefully speech is harmful but is factually speaking harmful?

Apparently there are many people who feel the same way I do which explains Trump's huge rise in the polls.

and oh the latest from a university in New Hampshire you can't say white any longer you have to say European-American; however you can say black

As an aside here, the University of New Hampshire president was very surprised when he learned that the guide - not a directive- had been published on their website. He had a meeting with the official who had it compiled and it was immediately taken off the site. The university president disagreed with the ridiculous guide.

You can google it on reason.com.

Dear Guest: Thank you for the heads up. I was not aware of the reason.com web site but have saved it in my favorites.

Its a good sign that the president of NHU recognized the absurdity of the guide but to those creative minds that complied it well they appearto have too much time on their hands

Perhaps people such as this ought to spend more time focused on past and present Orwellian societies that control/controlled every aspect of peoples lives thoughts, etc I'm sure those leaders rationalize what they are/were doing is/was for the common good too.

This topic of freedom of speech/expression is important because it is a concept that can be quickly taken away from people without awareness. They speak of the salami technique used in Eastern Europe where their freedoms were taken away one slice at a time.

Some on this forum will quickly dismiss it but the story related in the original post here is instructive in just how much freedom we have lost since 1968. I am a federalist and strongly believe in state rights. I fear what the federal government is becoming and the negative affect it has on our lives.
This is especially disturbing because he proportion of citizens with an entitlement mentality is growing both with individuals and corporations. Free stuff comes at a heavy price because it reduces freedoms..government I don't need your stinking head outs.

Dear Guest: I do not watch Hannity. However I found William F. Buckley thought process fascinating and envied his ability to turn a phrase. Now there was a master wordsmith

I am glad you went to reason.com and found out the directive you spoke of at the U of NH was merely an unauthorized guide. It is worth checking things out before posting, isn't it? No one is taking away your freedom of speech.

Government - I don't need your stinking hand outs? Do you get Social Security benefits? You will get more out than you put in. Medicare? Would you rather pay the medical bills yourself without Medicare?

Anyhow, enjoy your Sunday and wonderful day in The Villages.

Careful what you say. You may not know as much as you think and then make the mistake you just made. If Social Security was invested properly instead of being raided/borrowed from, we would be getting much more. SS is NOT a handout, it is a gov enforced deduction with a promise of returning those monies to us upon retirement. I earned my SS and like I said, if it had been invested properly, I would be rather wealthy now. And I can prove that point, if necessary.
Regarding Medicare, I find Medicare a ripoff. You pay into Medicare all your working life and then you merely get hospitalization paid for at retirement. If you want any more provisions paid for, such as doctor visits, prescriptions, etc you must pay another $100+ per month(or more) to supplement those benefits. I am thankful that I have private insurance and do not pay for Medicare part B, C or D.
Neither SS or Medicare is a "handout." Liberals like to try to use that in their argument to justify their socialistic values. The fact is that any business that the gov gets involved in regarding the use of taxpayer dollars is usually handled poorly at best.
On top of the above, Obamacare (thanks to Democrats) is stealing/STEALING over a half trillion bucks from our Medicare to provide your so-called "handouts" to those that probably don't even contribute to Medicare funding.
Go ahead and deny all you want because that what being a liberal today is all about, DENIAL.

I don't watch Hannity but it is obvious that you do. FOX wouldn't be the number one cable news network if not for the many liberals that also view it. Hannity must be pretty good if he takes so much heat and jealousy from you.

Dear Guest: You spoke the truth and said it well. My father's generation appreciated social security more than those whom followed.

As to the word "entitlement" the primary beneficiaries are politicians because they always felt entitled to raid this fund anytime they wanted.

Why would I eat my heart out? I am totally enjoying my wonderful day in The Villages. I was not being sarcastic in wishing Mr. Best Regards a wonderful day. Hope you have one, too.
