I didn't know that ????
Have you ever rented or borrowed a car and when
arriving at the gas station wondered...mmm, which side is the gas filler cap? My normal solution was to stick my head out the window, strain my neck and look, try to see in the side mirrors or even get out of the car! Well ladies and gentlemen, I'm going to share with you my little secret so you will no longer look like Ace Ventura on your way to the gas station or put your neck at risk of discomfort or injury. If you look at your dash gas gauge, you will see a small icon of a gas pump~~~The handle of the gas pump will extend out on either the left or right side of the gas pump. If your tank is on the left, the handle will be on the left. If your tank is on the right, the handle will be on the right It is that simple! dumbfounded fumar

I never heard that clue before....
I did hear that on MOST cars...not all....but most that on the gas gauge there is a small arrow.... pointing right or left...this also tells you which side the tank is on.... I never even noticed the arrows until someone told me....I think it was on the Ellen Degenerous show that I saw this.... Pretty neat how the car makers leave these little clues for us....although it would be nice if they TOLD us they did this!

Sorry FUMAR. According to SNOPES, this does not always work. It is hit or miss.
http://www.snopes.com/autos/techno/icon.asp However, the article does state that some of the later model cars have a little triangle on the left or right side of the gas pump light to denote the side the cap is on.

My experience with rental cars is there is usually a sticker (placed by the rental company, not the carmaker) telling you which side to fill.
In a borrowed car, you're on your own.

How did that work on some older cars that had their fill-up in the back under the license plate?
I had one of those clunkers! |

And the ones that were filled by raising the tail light to get access to the gas nozzle.

What a great thread, but lets take it beyond gas cap locations. I've got one for you. This was emailed to me several years ago and I was totally amazed. It takes simple things for simple minds!
How often are we frustrated when the roll of foil or plastic wrap pops out of the box when we are using it causing much frustration and waste of the product and time? You know what I am talking about. ;-) Go ahead, go to the kitchen and check. If you're like myself, and most likely the majority of others, your first thought will be, "How come no one ever told me about this before and why is it I never noticed until now!" The next thing you'll do is 'press the tabs' to test it. On each end of the box of aluminum foil or plastic wrap, generic or not, it will say "Press here to lock tab." Press them both and you will never have the roll of foil or plastic wrap popping out of the box again. :-) The above is from: http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf12838572.tip.html Xavier |

This has been going around for awhile but, unfortunately, it isn't true.

OK, I had to go look. Yep, my gas guage has a gas pump icon with a triangle on the left side, pointing left. Never noticed it before.
Now they just need a triange for people who get up on the wrong side of the bed in the morning. P p.s., for people who get up from the wrong bed in the morning, there's AA. |
