I have been wondering how many people here take advantage or can take advantage of the food stamp program or SNAP as it is called today. I was thinking why not we worked our butts off for 50 years. Just curious.

It's supposed to be for "poor" people. Not too many poor people should be able to afford $147/month amenities fee.

What Resources Can I Have (and Still Get SNAP benefits)?

Households may have $2,250 in countable resources, such as a bank account, or $3,250 in countable resources if at least one person is age 60 or older, or is disabled. However, certain resources are NOT counted, such as a home and lot, the resources of people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), the resources of people who receive Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), and most retirement (pension) plans.

If people who do not need the assistance but can weasel the language and their assets in such a way to technically qualify receive SNAP, you have just taken food from those who need help. Perhaps you can also go to the local food banks and be sure to get the last turkey for Thanksgiving depriving a family with no other option of that meal. I hope your OP was intended as humor.

There are some in TV who could qualify but would rather go hungry than take advantage of the program. There are some who need it and use it here. Then are those who have found to weasel around everything and take it just because. I'm proud to know some of the first two groups. I won't talk to the last gang.

Just because you can do something doesn't make it the right thing to do and just because others abuse something doesn't make it right for you to do so. And I don't wear knickers but they would certainly be in a bunch right now if I did.

And then there's a fourth group---those that probably need it, but make ridiculous choices as evidenced by last week:

I was at the fish counter and a lady, maybe 25-30 years old, came up with 5 kids ranging from an infant to 7 or 8 years old. She ordered 9, yes NINE pounds of snow crab clusters at $23.99/pound. Then, at checkout, pulled out the EBT card. Now, I'll admit I can afford 9# of crab if I want it, after working for many years, but I wouldn't spend that kind of money on crab. So why do I have to support her crabs? I think there should be a reasonable list of items that can be bought with other people's money. I'm sure those kids could eat more and for a longer time on $216 of milk, vegetables, fruit, chicken and ground beef.

For some, more kids = more $$$$$$.......just keep pumpin em out sometimes I think birth control should be mandatory (for some)

Odds are the crabs aren't for her. Frequently, these people will buy something really expensive and then sell it to another individual for half the cost. Sadly, the cash is frequently used for drugs or alcohol. However, there are times the cash is used to buy paper products and cleaning supplies, neither of which is covered by EBT. I get angrier at the individual purchasing the crab legs from those in need than the person selling them. Whether used for drugs or items necessary to live, the one individual needs the cash. The other is simply taking advantage of that need.

I won't begrudge someone on food stamps buying an occasional treat. I remember once a woman standing in line with two small steaks and the old-fashioned food stamps. Of course, someone had to make a comment. The poor woman left the steaks, purchased the necessities with her food stamps, with tears streaming. The gentleman in front of me bought the steaks and gave them to her. Turns out it was her wedding anniversary and this was to be a surprise for her husband. It is easy to judge and condemn but sometimes compassion goes a long way.

I won't comment on the five kids. Here's hoping she was just babysitting to earn some money.

Go to EBAY and do a search for baby formula. Almost 4000 listings. I wonder how much was purchased with WIC.

The majority were probably shoplifted. It is one of the more common items stolen from grocery stores and off trucks. Check Publix. Their baby formula is now under lock and key.

I just got on EBAY, picked one listing clicked on it. The person is located in

Las Vegas, Nevada. Her name on EBAY is SEXYMOM 702 - She has 16 other items for sale..... 7 are infant formula. Some in lots of 5,6, and even 9 large cans.
