Studs Terkel has been one of my favorite writers for lots and lots of years. When he died last fall, I knew I would miss him. I really like oral histories and Studs Terkel was the master of getting those stories. The Good War about WWII has been a favorite of mine. And now I think I am going to take another look at Hard Times: An Oral History of The Great Depression. And I think I will get a copy for my grandchildren, too. We have been talking a little bit about the times we are in now. I guess it is not the D-word so far, but things will be different for a while. And perspective is so important.

And I keep thinking that this book would be a good one for a book club. (But I am not Oprah.)

For now though, I just want to share this little article from a recent AARP magazine. Studs comments on the times we now face. He is no longer with us. But he is still talking to us. I think what he says here might make others feel better, too. Studs Terkel could always get the big picture through the little stories. And in all that he found hope.
