Four years ago, when we moved from New Hampshire to The Villages, I discovered the "Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration" website, https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov.

You could search for movers with the best safety record... or the fewest number of moving violations... or driver arrests for DUI. We chose United Van Lines because, at the time, they seemed to have the best record overall. I checked the FMCSA website this morning, and it's been redesigned, but I think most of the information is still there, just in different places.

United wasn't the cheapest, but we were concerned with protecting our stuff, so were willing to pay a little bit more for peace of mind, rather than a bit less for pieces of broken furniture.
