This is an interesting process, depending on the location of the supports, there is a steel support enclosure about 3/8 behind the stucco. I am in the process of rehanging pulldown shades after the addition of our birdcage. These were originally attached to the aluminum channels that were removed. If you can find the right screws (I have never found these), you may be able to duplicate what the original builders did when they installed the aluminum channel. I use 3 drill bits to do this and about 5-10 minutes per hole to install the expandable plugs.
