I have only resided in The Villages for a few months now and was planning on doing a garage sale. I know about the restrictions (i.e. items should only be in the garage, no signs, etc.), but I've gone to visit a few garage sales the past couple weeks and was surprised at the very, very little turnout. At 8:15am there was no one buying from the garage sale that was advertised to start at 8am! I've done garage sales in Miami and between 6 and 10am it's a madhouse.

Are garage sales not popular here in The Villages? Is the summer not the right time to have a sale (I'm really in no rush)? Are there any good "marketing strategies" (besides the Daily Sun)? I would welcome any advice or suggestions.

My only suggestion would follow what my street learned when we had a sale a year or so ago:

Try to make it a street-wide or some larger group than just one house. I think we had a dozen houses participating and customers were chomping at the bit as soon as the sun came up!

We did our sale in November, a couple weeks before Thanksgiving. I think that'll help your crowd, too.

Garage Sales are very popular in the Villages from September through say May, not so much in the summer months.

At 8:15 you were probably too late. The crowd gathers around 7:00 or earlier. If you have items that have not sold by 10:30 they most likey will not sell.
Some advice when conducting your sale. Have several friends help and watch the crowd. It is better to open the garage 15-30 minutes earlier that the start time and have a steady flow of people.....if you wait there may be 20-30 people in the garage at one time. There will be items that grow little feet and walk out the door(yes even in The Villages).
Two day sales are probably not worth your time and effort on the second day.
