Any shortwave enthusiasts in TV?
Just looked in the current club listing. ( I don't mean the half wave of TV Gate Keepers Society.) Just need some local info for a story I'm writing. THANX Last edited by SFSkol; 08-03-2017 at 10:41 AM. |

Thanks. Didn't think of amateur radio as shortwave. I'll contact them.

True story----My grandmother gave me an old Philco tube radio with a shortwave band. Lived in CT at the time. I was tuning around the band and stopped on 2182 Kilocycles. Heard the original call from the Andrea Doria that it had collided with the Stockholm, near a sea bouy. They kept calling "MAYDAY". I told my dad who called the State Police who called the USCG. They were just hearing it for the first time.. I wish I still had that old radio.

What SWL people listen to is foreign commercial radio broadcasts on "short wave bands." I haven't been a SWL in decades, although I occasionally come across some commercial broadcasts on bands where some countries allow commercial radio on bands that are primarily for ham operators. I'm sure someone in The Villages Radio Club can give you more information.

I gave up on shortwave listening after moving here some 11 years ago from up north. Reception here was not good (unless you understood Spanish and listened to Central and South America). Perhaps signals (especially from Europe) were beamed more to the north or atmospherics here were not very good. Additionally, some countries dropped SW service and switched to streaming. I now do some international listening in this manner -- using a CC Radio and WiFi. Reception is clear as a bell, but it's just not the same as twirling the dial on a shortwave radio to see what you can pick up.
