Today you can find typo's even in many of the top rated news papers and other publications.
You cannot rely on spell check . I am afraid with the likes of Twitter and cell phone texting its only going to get worse. Add to that cursive writing no longer taught and you have a formula for...... A columnist with the WSJ wrote an article about a charter school for blacks in New York City that is teaching its students Latin among other courses. The results are impressive. America educators in their search for the perfect formula miss the obvious going back to the basic adding back the classic focusing on diagramming a sentence learning multiplication tables ................... |

IMO the reason this happens the computer automatically substitutes word if you don't proof read it carefully it goes missed. Also I find that i sometimes (quit often) using IPad key board I sometimes miss the letter I'm trying to hit, the computer will automatically fill in word it thinks what I am trying to type.
Also sometimes my finger nail hit the letter and it don't register, good example is th "the". I did hit all the letters for "the". And again if not proof read carefully it gets caught by the grammar police. Actually IMO as long as it don't change intent what the big deal? ![]() |

BUT, that "eclypse" mistake that went out in the weekly advertisement was different. TOTV is a business. A careful proofreading always should be part of any publication done by a business. That was not the first time that ad looked like a slap-dash job, but that error was perhaps the most glaring. If spelling is not whoever's thing, they probably know it and should ask somebody else to proofread any business publication. Hey, Carl, thanks. I was going to post about that but I figured it would just turn into somebody around here making it my fault for noticing and then I would have to get snarky right back -- which I can do but do not like to do. Anyway, hey, Carl, thanks. ![]() Last edited by Boomer; 08-22-2017 at 07:39 AM. Reason: Ironically, I had typed topsinmo instead of topspinmo -- caught it |

It might have been a less glaring error if it had just been in the body of a story, but it was the headline for the entire message. To those who would blame it on autofill or autocorrect, I would point out that there isn't any word spelled as they spelled it.

Me, too! Carl! Me, too! I also looked to see if it was a real word! Now......if only, if only, I could work up my courage to tell people to STOP spelling Hemingway with two m's. That keeps happening every time there is a thread about Hemingway's. I don't mind reading about..... The Old Man and the Seafood For Whom the Bill Tolls Dearth (of top shelf) in the Afternoon The Price Also Rises A Farewell to Hemingway's But, darn it, that extra 'm' does not belong in Hemingway. (sigh) |

Does anyone know how to stop my phone and tablet from changing what I type?

My favorite was when a lady posted on TOTV that she stopped texting her granddaughter after calling her a whore.

My children were taught that spelling isn't important and it's more important to be creative, It's like nails on a chalk board to me when someone blatantly misspells words. Or when someone starts a sentence with "her and me", yet I know teachers that do it. I think I'm just an old-fashioned fuddy duddy. I think teachers may well be correct that it shuts down creativity to worry about spelling and grammar.

For a period of time my staff had the responsibility of publishing the regional newsletter. Before that newsletter could be distributed it had to be proof read by every member of my staff and then proof read again by every other vice president.
My staff and I would read the newsletter backward from bottom to top to check for spelling because the spellcheck had a mind of its own and yet even then sometime we missed. |
