I'm a proud veteran of the Vietnam War, but I have to say that I am uncomfortable when people thank me for my service. For that reason, I seldom wear my Navy hat or other identifying items. It's not just me - I know other veterans who have mixed feelings as well. I'm really appreciative that the attitudes toward veterans has changed over the years, and the respect given today is wonderful. The Honor Flight support in The Villages is just fantastic. Personally, I just never know how to respond to people. When someone says "Thank you for your service", should I say "You're welcome"? There were several reasons why I enlisted at 18 - I was a terrible student and would have failed miserably in college (but after four years in the Navy, I went to college and graduated with honors), I knew my WWII vet dad would respect me for serving, and I knew I needed structure in my life. It was never for patriotism, although I consider myself a patriot today. Believe me, I got more out of my four years of service than I could ever repay. It set me up for success in life, and for that I'm forever grateful. So no thanks are needed by me. Anyway, keep respecting veterans everyone, but speaking only for myself I'll just continue keeping a low profile
