Default Cistern

Anybody install or even think about installing a cistern to collect rain water for irrigation?

While diving around the area I noticed a company that installs irrigation and had a stack of holding tanks that would be used as cistern and that got me thinking. I have no idea as to the cost of the install or the ROI on such a project.

Default rain barrel?

We are probably moving down this summer/fall and have thought of installing a rain barrel off one of the back corner downspouts (in a CYV - probably wouldn't pass muster without the courtyard fence) and connect that to some kind of a drip system for watering. Anyone done this?

It's probably more than we could do ourselves (we're not all that handy) but am curious if anyone else has tried this and would like to know if you did it yourself or what contractor you used. Doesn't seem like all that big a job, but can't quite figure out how you'd irrigate the planting areas that are separated by grass or patio concrete from the rain barrel.
