Default Why So Many Lindas?

I can understand the truckloads of ladies in the Villages being named Judy... The demographics would have many born in the 1940s and Judy Garland was the darling of America. Many parents probably named daughters after her.
Is that it?

OK... but what about all the Lindas? They're all over the place too! Linda Darnell? Not THAT big.

Maybe I have too much time on my hands...

Walt.

I dunno. But you will find a plethora of Karen and Sharon and Debbie and Diane and Judy and Kathy and Mary, but not too many Taylors and Ashleys and Emilys.

You will run into a lot of Rays and Ronnies and Chucks but not too many Camerons.

I swear you're 90 percent safe in saying "Hi Bob" to almost any man you see here.

Boomer names have arrived. In another 20 years, the Jennifers and Matthews and Jasons will hit with full force.

From the land of Google:

Top 10 baby boy names from 1950 to 1959, in order of popularity, were James, Michael, Robert, John, David, William, Richard, Thomas, Mark and Charles. All are Christian saints’ names and all of them go back in history for centuries as the names of emperors, kings, and nobles. These handsome names stand as pillars of Western civilization.

James (English) means “steadfast;” Michael (Hebrew) means "who is like God;” Robert (English) means “brilliant;” John (Hebrew) means “honorable;” David (Hebrew) means “beloved;” William (English) means “staunch protector;” Richard (Germanic) means “strong ruler;” Thomas (Greek) means “twin;” Mark (Latin) means “combative;” and Charles (German) means “well-loved.”

From 1950 to 1959, the top baby girl names took a totally new turn. Moms and dads felt it was time for a big change. The second world war was over and done with. It was time to clear the decks. Why not get away from the biblical names, as well as the names of empresses and queens, to say nothing of the heroines of old books? Their babies were children of a new world. What better time than now for thoroughly modern American names and their meanings.

The baby girl names, in order of their popularity, are Mary, Linda, Patricia, Susan, Deborah, Barbara, Debra, Karen, Nancy, and Donna. Mary (Hebrew) means “spiritual;” Linda (Spanish) means “pretty;” Patricia (Latin) means” of noble birth;” Susan (Hebrew) means “lily;” Deborah (Hebrew) means “prophetess;” Barbara (Greek) means “unusual;” Debra (Hebrew) means “prophetess;” Karen (Greek) means “pure-hearted;” Nancy (Medieval English) is a pet form of “Agnes” meaning “generous;” and Donna (Italian) means “ladylike.”

Lots of pretty "Lindas" around.....

Default Linda

I have a sister named Linda - she is the oldest, born in 1946. There was (according to my Mom) a very popular song called Linda - I think recorded by Perry Como and others, but not sure if it was recorded before 1946 or not. Anyway, it's a cute song - check it out on Lyrics.com. There were lots of Lindas in my sister's class - high school class of 1964, fewer in mine (1968). The earliest boomers were of course born in 1946, so I think that explains the numbers.

My name never was and never will be popular. There was once a comedian by that name though. Wish I could say I thought she was funny.

by the time Jan and Dean wrote and sung la la la la la la la la linda
the name was on the way out
there are many more that have it and might use another name to avoid dating themselves.

I wish my mother were alive to ask her! In 4th grade I started a new school and when the teacher introduced me a boy in the class said, "Oh, No!! Not another Linda." There were already 4 so I made the 5th. Scared for life -- lol.

I had 3 Linda's in my grade school class. High school I don't remember. My grandmother would have been about 110 was named Lynda, that's why I use the Y in my username. My real name is Linda.

Walt.
That's it, Walt. My grandma said my mother could name her baby sister Judith (Judy), and then I came along and she named ME Judith (Judy), so I have an Aunt Judy who is 3 years older than I am. She was always Big Judy and I was Little Judy...
And there ARE truckloads of Judys here!
